it should because of the nearing of election day? Just a thought. I guess we'll find out after the storm passes and whether or not it is being made into a political football. I know that the Repugs are just laying for PBO to make some type of mistake in handling. I'm sure that PBO will not just fly over the land and just look out AF1's window as Dubya did.

(12,296 posts)Weather-related stories that affect the east coast & media HQs get more attention.
Blizzards in Montana & North Dakota, no matter how fierce, receive generally nothing more than a quick "Wow, look at that..."

(251 posts)How newsworthy is a blizzard?
Myrina
(12,296 posts)If its 50 below zero with 60 mph winds blowing snow that causes loss of power/people trapped & the resultant flooding when that snow melts, how is that NOT newsworthy? Because its in the middle of bumfuck Montana as opposed to downtown NYC ... only difference IMO.

(42,239 posts)so its hardly surprising the MSM are giving it broad cover. Same applies to the news channels etc here in the UK.

but this is worthy of constant attention - this is one of the few times where the media actually informs us of things we need to hear.

(58,179 posts)I'm the first person to bash the national local media for AAAAH IT'S COMING STRAP YOUR DICK TO YOUR LEG CUZ WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE coverage of storms, but this is for real. Atlantic City is awash in many places, Hoboken is flooding, the Esplanade at Battery Park in New York City is basically underwater, and the worst of the storm is still hours away. Farther south from there, the eastern seaboard is taking a fearsome beating where Sandy prepares to make direct landfall.
Not bullshit.

(60,335 posts)That being said, this is a very big storm and people should heed the calls to evacuate or prepare.

(20,600 posts)It seems to me this is one big mother fucker of a storm, and though I won't be affected way out West, its even scaring me a little from some of the pics.

(42,239 posts)NEW YORK (AP) -- Waves splashed over the sea walls at the southern tip of Manhattan, already at Hurricane Irene levels Monday hours before the worst of a mammoth storm was to hit the nation's largest city with a wall of water that could reach 11 feet.

To my mind that's important. Last time I checked out of curiosity on Google Earth Manhattan , for example , is only 19 feet above sea level.

(3,186 posts)when your adult child is literally stuck in Manhattan. I don't think it's even possible to leave at this point.
For reasons I don't quite understand, she is being extremely zen about the whole thing.
I, on the other hand, am worried sick. Somewhere in between would probably be the most appropriate mindset, but it's no easy task to take it down a notch when your kid is stuck on a bleeping island that happens to be only 19 feet above sea level in a storm such as this.

(42,239 posts)My own daughter is 43 and still I need to retrieve her from time to time from central London if she's missed a train whatever.
From our news coverage the best protected buildings are in Wall Street - go figure. One of those might provide a safe haven if push comes to shove.

(3,186 posts)Yes, it's amazing that no matter how old our children, we parents never stop worrying.
Thank you for the tip as well. I will be sure to pass it on to her.
