By Alicia M. Cohn
Ann Romney earlier this year at a private fundraiser described Mitt Romney as the "grown-up" the country needs to repair the economy and prevent an economic collapse in the style of Greece.
"You know the ship's going over the waterfall; it's almost there," the former Massachusetts first lady said in March at a private fundraiser in Orange County, Calif., according to audio obtained by Mother Jones and published Monday. "And we look what's happening in Greece, and we look what's happening around the world, we look what's happening internationally. This is a frightening world, and we need a grown-up, and we need someone that understands the economy. So I'm glad Mitt is grown-up to you all."
According to Mother Jones, Ann Romney was explaining why, although after 2008 she told her husband she never wanted him to run for president again, she insisted he jump into the race again last year.
It's not the first time Ann Romney has used the phrase "grown-up" as a descriptor to provide a negative view of the president. ...

(20,776 posts)Ann, when you find a "Grown Up" in the REPUBLICAN party let us know, in the mean time we will stick with our young, good looking Nobel Peace prize winner.

(40,212 posts)She is as big a phony as her husband.
The economy is getting better, but the republicans don't want you to believe that.
And since when is President Obama not a "grown-up"? What a stupid thing to say. Is he saying he is a "boy"? Is this another republican dog whistle?

(32,085 posts)Imagine the outrage from the right if Michelle Obama called any one of them a "petulant child", especially their presidential candidate.
We do need a grown up that understands the economy. That's why I'm voting for president Obama.

(32,085 posts)Because, not only did your little screed show us that you have no fucking clue as to how the economy in this country, Greece, or the rest of the world works, you sure as hell don't resemble any mature grown-up I know. You want to see a "petulant child", Ann? Look in in the mirror, you nasty, nasty cry baby.

(16,993 posts)America does need a grown up who understands the economy. Which is exactly why President Obama is the only choice this election.
You don't create jobs in America by off shoring American jobs to another country. Yet Mitt is responsible for how many jobs lost overseas over the years? Is this the type of person Americans want to put their trust in to improve the economy? This is just basic common sense, and what Mitt has done has contributed to our current problems.
A grown up knows that lying to the American people is wrong. Mitt tells lies, and that makes him untrustworthy, thus unacceptable for the position of President of the United States. He's lied about Jeep closing factories and sending jobs overseas, yet hasn't apologized or corrected himself, even after Chrysler said they have no plans to close factories here.
A grown up would not run a campaign the way Mitt Romney has allowed his to be run. Misleading ads that are never pulled from circulation. No apologies for releasing incorrect information. Photo shopping images to make crowds look bigger. Not checking information for facts before reacting to it. Complaining that President Obama has been soft on China, while Mitt is making millions on Chinese investments.
The list goes on and on. Grown ups don't do these things, they don't play games with people's lives. So I agree with Ann Romney, we do need a grown up who understands the economy. And when you check the facts, it's obvious the only grown up running for office is President Obama.

(37,160 posts)Let's see... they listened to their neocon advisors and deprioritized counterterrorism before 911, pushed through huge tax cuts for the wealthy, invented reasons to invade Iraq, enshrined deregulation, botched hurricane response to Katrina, grabbed unlimited authority to spy on US citizens, and bailed out Wall Street.
Thanks, Ann, but I think I'll stick with the kids.

(1,267 posts)......from the perspective of everyday, average Americans -- as opposed to the uber rich who never have to worry about making the rent or having to choose between buying dinner or the meds they need to keep them alive...........which is exactly why we elected Barak Obama 4 years ago & will re-elect him next week.
What we absolutely, positively do NOT need is an entitled, self-serving bully who needs his wife to "settle" him (i.e., manage his petulant, emotional outbursts when he doesn't get his way) and has a history of destroying jobs vs. creating them.
Edit: missed a couple words I meant to put in first go round.
