President Obama will air response to Romney’s controversial Jeep ad

Obama spokesman Ben LaBolt told reporters the campaign will soon have an ad on the air in Ohio responding to a new controversial spot by Mitt Romney that highlights Chrysler contemplating building Jeeps in China.

The Romney ad has been widely criticized for leaving the impression that Chrysler is moving jobs from its Toledo, Ohio Jeep plant overseas. In fact, Chrysler has indicated it is considering opening a new Chinese plant to build trucks for the Chinese market but has no plans to move Ohio jobs to China.

The ad appeared to be an effort to blunt Obama’s advantage on the auto bailout issue in Ohio, where 1 in 8 jobs is connected with the car industry.

But the Obama campaign has sensed an opening in the blowback to the ad, a chance to argue that Romney is willing to stretch the truth to win votes.

“We will have a response spot up shortly,” OFA press secretary Ben LaBolt told reporters on Monday. “I think Ohioans will recognize when something reeks of desperation.”

In a separate call, campaign manager Jim Messina called it one of the “most misleading, hypocritical, and indefensible ads we’ve ever seen in a presidential race.”

UAW director Ken Lortz told reporters in the OFA call that Romney was using “using the Jeep workers in Toledo as pawns to falsely politicize this issue.”

“I have talked directly to Chrysler about what’s going on and they’ve said they have absolutely no intention of shifting any production from Toledo to China,” he said.

particular situation. Romney hung his rope really low, time to reel him in with it.

We'll find out, can't wait to see the ad.

The terror and panic it creates in the hearts and souls of the many, many employees of Jeep and Chrysler. Just the hint of massive lay offs and jobs shipped overseas creates unbelievable anxiety and fear. Even when it has been shown to be untrue, still the "what if it is true..and they just don't want to tell us" extreme fear continues for those employees and their families and their communities. And all because Romney thinks this lie will help him politically...and will do anything, tell any lie...and not give a flying fig what fear and terror it will cause to working people and their families. Romney is Terrorism...and this is a terror attack on his own country.

My first thought in all of this was also how it could impact employees et al.

I knew Romney was a douche going in - but honestly, I never thought he would be as MUCH of a douche as he's turned out to be.

These lies do hurt Chrysler's reputation and probably are stressing out workers. They should call a press conference to present the facts. They don't need to attack Romney or get into any of the politics involved. Just present the facts about their plans--that they actually hope to add workers for domestic sales, continue to grow, and now are looking to *expand* into the Chinese market.
