I've been through a tropical storm and two hurricanes in Houston. The howling wind is something I do not miss.

wind. We go to the basement here when the big winds come and we've had our share of them over the years out on the prairie.

Seriously, if you're not in the bathroom, please go there. Take some blankets, pillows, etc. to be comfortable, and take your shoes, too, if you're not wearing them.

If I were there with you, I would NOT use the elevator..hate to be stuck in one if the power suddenly went out.

And big windows can and do break...I remember seeing the pics of the hotels down here after a hurricane, windows WERE smashed, curtains hanging out of them, and not all the damage was on the water side of the building.
an amazing number of objects go flying in those powerful winds.

A lot of those tall buildings will probably lose windows and debris will probably be flying around everywhere.

I would. Actually, the sounds during disasters are horrific. I was near epicenter of Northridge quake and the best way to describe it is imagine being in Grand Central station with a dozen trains zipping by at the same time. Yes - it was THAT loud. Disorienting.

Stay safe, Steve.

I never panicked too much when I lived in Manhattan because I always felt fairly safe and that provisions were easily at hand. But this one could be worse than anything I have experienced. I would definitely stock up and stay inside until everything blows over. I am not sure where you are from, but chances are you will not be able to get back home for at least a few days.

I am now in Boston on the 8th floor of an apartment building (Charles River Park - right in back of Mass. General Hospital). Our offices were closed today, but I am fearing that it could get worse. I have never really taken these things seriously before, so I am not quite sure how to react. I have the TV and the internet for now. MGH will have generators is things get really bad so I can always go there.

The winds have been howling through the trees since last night. It is scary because I live in a mobile home and branches have been hitting the roof all day. I hate to see what is up there.

was it indeed the Le Parker Meridien?

I could have sworn I heard "park" and "Meridien".

And all due to the crane problem.
