Electricity-Free Cooking

What's Cookin:

Houses all across the East Coast are hunkered down in anticipation for the worst of today's storm, Hurricane Sandy, with many expecting power outages that could last up to a week. While we were all encouraged to stock up our pantries over the weekend and are now staying inside for the time being, knowing what to do with all of those pantry staples once the lights go out can be a bit difficult.

In preparation for all the impending chaos, we are pushing aside our scheduled Halloween article to bring you some hurricane-ready recipes. These are all simple, functional recipes that will come very much in handy in case of a power outage. Remember, canned foods and extra water are key! Authorities recommend being prepared with one gallon of water per day per person in the household. Stay safe, East Coasters!

And getting things hot uses a lot more power than most other household things we do with electricity, lights, tv, computers and so on.

A 12V crock put you could run off your car is a possibility but it would drain a car battery just warming up, you would have to run the engine a lot. It wouldn't be impossible to shade tree engineer a 12V crock pot with a big 12VDC to 110VAC inverter and a regular crock put and then you'd have power for everything else too as long as your battery and gasoline held out.

Fuel like propane or gasoline is much more energy dense than batteries, that's why electric cars have such short range still.
