Crazy theory about "Likely Voter" screens
first, this is a generalization.
having spent a lot of time in both academia, liberal circles as well as Evangelical and conservative circles (as an insider) here's what I notice:
Liberals are more likely to speak in shades of gray (the old kind ) rather than black and white.
Conservatives are more likely to speak in terms of black and white or binary things.
Anyway, here comes a pollster, looking for objective measures of intensity and commitment to one's respective side and they start gauging the answers of people in both groups.
If you ask about raw intensity, are conservatives more or less likely to express doubt about their side or express hesitation about their most pressing issues? If asked to describe their intensity on a scale of 1 to 10, are conservatives likely to give you answers of 1 or 10 answers than liberals? Are even motivated liberals more likely to give you answers less at the extremes? I think so.
I started thinking about this when the following thought crossed my mind:
The people that say that the science on global warming isn't convincing are the same people that tell me to believe in a 6-day Creation story from the Bible.
In other words, we don't all speak the same language, but just because people who speak in terms of black and white are strident, doesn't mean those who don't lack intensity.
