This is insanely unfair. This New York gerrymander would have helped us offset losses in places like Florida due to their gerrymander.
And I believe all the judges on this court are Democrats. 4-3 decided to get rid of the NY redistricting map.
This means that 152 Republican districts are allowed to be gerrymandered, while Dems only get about 30.
It's so ridiculously unfair that Dems are expected to play by the rules, while Republicans get away with anything they want. I freakin hate this country.

(54,770 posts)pretty well nationwide in redistricting this period.

(3,213 posts)continue to be allowed to gerrymander.
It's stupid.
And no, we're not doing that great. If Florida and Ohio keep their map, us losing seats in New York means a guaranteed Republican House win.

(3,213 posts)If one party is allowed to gerrymander and rig elections, and the other can't, Democracy doesn't exist.

(10,429 posts)That's why they continue to take offices they lose.
They'll cheat any way possible and exploit anything they can.
Just ask the Democratic candidate who got 3 million MORE votes, but was denied the presidency.
How the fuck ANYONE can be ok with that is beyond my understanding.

(10,429 posts)Really??? It's good when something that helps Democrats is shot down?? Yes, gerrymandering ain't right, but until the other side is forced to stop, why the fuck should we continue to shoot ourselves?????
And we can thank a couple Senators with D's after their names when election trickery gives us republicon rule in 2022 and 2024.

(54,770 posts)gerrymandering a good bit this year.
Besides, unlike some appear to think, gerrymandering aint right even if it favors Democrats, BECAUSE IT MANIPULATES ELECTIONS. Maybe you ought to check the definition. Look up ethnics, morality, and democracy too.
Give credit to NY for making a tough decision.
Besides, we are coming out ahead this year.

Republicans were allowed to gerrymander 152 districts. Democrats got about 30.
Democrats are not doing that well on redistricting.

(3,213 posts)Republicans have gerrymandered 152 districts.
Hoyt
(54,770 posts)You have a list of those.
Look, I know gerrymandering happens, I live in South. But that doesnt mean we have to do it. Appreciate Democrats who stood against it too.

Democrats redistricting gains hit a roadblock: The Supreme Court

Wisconsin Democrats thought they had won the redistricting war. They took over the governors office, competed in and won state judicial races and filed lawsuits as early as they could, determined to prevent another cycle of Republican-leaning maps. After a battle between Democratic Gov. Tony Evers and Republican legislators, a conservative judge sided with Evers, rejecting a Republican-drawn legislative map in favor of one that was better for Democrats. But Republicans took their case to the U.S. Supreme Court and won. It was a Hail Marys Hail Mary, not something we were very focused on, said Ben Wikler, the chair of Wisconsins Democratic Party. But here we are.
After a redistricting cycle that initially went better than expected for Democrats, the conservative Supreme Court has bolstered Republican efforts to reverse that trend, with more cases in the wings from GOP attorneys and legislators from multiple states. Alabama Republicans persuaded the Supreme Court to override a lower courts ruling that would have forced the state to draw two congressional districts with large Black voting blocs. In Florida, Gov. Ron DeSantis has laid the groundwork for a legal battle over his desire to eliminate a district with a plurality of Black voters. Ohio Republicans, who have repeatedly lost in the state Supreme Court over gerrymandered maps, is waging a parallel legal fight in a more favorable federal court.
What worries Democrats and voting rights advocates most is the potential that the Supreme Court will validate a legal theory that state legislatures alone must draw political maps a judgment that would give lawmakers final say over redistricting, stripping out the role that governors, judges and even independent commissions set up by voters have in the process. North Carolina Republicans have asked the court to weigh in; Republicans in other states, such as Pennsylvania and Ohio, have endorsed the idea, known colloquially as the independent state legislature theory.
If adopted, Democrats and voting rights advocates say, state legislatures many of them gerrymandered to maximize control would obtain unprecedented power. It would be Defcon 1 to democracy, said David Pepper, former Democratic state party chairman in Ohio. Theyre coming up with multiple ways to get around the fact that state Supreme Courts have risen as the strongest check on these gerrymandered state legislatures, Pepper said. Declaring statehouses beyond judicial review would be devastating to democracy. They basically are already not accountable at the polls, so the only thing we have at this point is courts to hold them into check.

(10,429 posts)I'm just among those who are sick of our side playing nice, giving the likes of Moscow Mitch their way and setting things up for future losses.
We cannot win that way.
Since that's OK with you, there's nothing else to be said.

Sorry, whats right is right. Besides, NY is a blue state and will remain that way.

(26,735 posts)I was merely correcting the notion that redistricting had been working out well this cycle.
That was the perception a month or two ago - but things don't look nearly as promising now (and that's on top of 2010's already challenging lines)

(7,864 posts)And New York was one of the reasons "Democrats are coming out pretty well nationwide."
If this decision is allowed to stand and the Florida changes are allowed to take effect -- which they almost certainly will be, once again, asymmetrical warfare -- Democrats will no longer be "coming out pretty well nationwide."
I am all for outlawing gerrymandering. But gerrymandering is not outlawed. And until it is, we should not unilaterally disarm ourselves while Republicans are using gerrymandering to devastating effect.

(10,429 posts)GOTV is "The Answer". It's not. By itself, it's not enough.
Republicons have been working to entrench their cheating, Democrats "play fair".
I wish people would pull their heads out of the sand and see what is going on.
That's what I think every time I read a post that we "just have to GOTV", or "stop saying republicons will win".
