It ain't the swirling water, it's what's in it.

That water is moving fast.

It takes only 2 feet of water to float a car.
Every year people are killed by driving thru standing water and being swept away.
EVERY year.
And this guy is thinking..what? He is going to pull his car to a dry spot?

You only have to overcome the surface area of the part of the tires touching the ground. Very small area.

But there is some solace in the fact that Sandy is going to mean lots and lots of jobs for construction and auto plant workers, and they need the work.

It also means that regardless of who is the president, the federal government will have to pitch in to help people pay for the work THAT WILL HAVE TO BE DONE.

Nobody is going to cut the federal government aid to the people suffering in this tragedy. And the insurance companies??? What will they do?

No one could have anticipated a storm of this size in New York City. That man by the car is up to his thighs in water. That car will never run again. And buildings in New York have basements. Many of them are old. This is sheer devastation.

The question now is how far this damage will reach.

Nor do I think it's Manhattan. A simple check of the actual news shows what's really happening. There is some flooding in the Battery Park area of Manhattan reaching "Irene levels" (whatever that means, but I know it wasn't anything like this photo).

I really wish people wouldn't get their news from whatever is circulating on FB rather than the actual news. It's not nice to scare the shit out of people with unverified photos contrary to what the news is reporting, and it would have been a simple thing to check the news to see if this photo was in any way representative of what's going on and where. And this one flat out is not.

Mostly because internet lines and probably telephone lines are located there. That picture isn't from this storm - that is not representative of what's going on in Manhattan at all.

Incidentally, just heard there's been one death from this storm reported already. A man was killed in his house when a tree fell on it. Also, in NYC the entire facade of a residential building fell off but miraculously there was no one injured. Geez, can you imagine just sitting there watching tv and suddenly that entire wall collapses and you're sitting in you easy chair looking out at the building across the street???
