General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsThe open hearings start in June. All of the crimes will be laid out in great detail.
For most Americans there will be no doubt many people must be indicted and convicted. After the hearings come to an end, Garland must be pressured by the Democrats to act. It will be time he starts indicting the leaders of the coup.
The Democrats must make the American people understand, holding Trump and his merry band of traitors accountable is the only way to save our democracy. Garland must hold them accountable. The Democrats must make it clear to the American people, if Garland does not hold the leaders of the coup accountable, it will end the rule of law in America and our democracy.
When you get down to it, these hearings are also about the DOJ and the rule of law in America. When the hearings end there is no reason why Garland cannot start indicting people like Meadows, Navarro, Rudy, Flynn the fake electors, etc.
When the hearings end, Garland has no excuses not to act. It's time.

(25,292 posts)Are they going to bring people before the committee and put them under oath and question them (televised)?
Or
Are they just going to go through a chronological timeline and tell us the story - complete with footnotes as to how they came to their conclusions based on all the info they came up with during their investigation.
Do we know yet how they will conduct these hearings?

to people like us (who read DU or other progressive sites, or keep up with politics regularly). Weve already heard all of this evidence, and decided what it means. We already know where most of the bodies are buried.
And we know that the cult will brush it all off as fake, politicized witch hunting intended to distract from Hunters laptop and the child trafficking operations.
And the soft middle still isnt paying attention. And wont, for the most part.
And the nations reaction will be shaped mostly by the narratives adopted by the media anyway. Most wont hear it via the hearings, but instead will hear what talking heads A and B say about it.
Im glad were doing it. It needs to be part of the record so future civilizations can better understand how we destroyed ourselves. But I wouldnt hold my breath that its going to have a profound impact.

(4,913 posts)Most Americans know about Jan 6th, but they don't know the details of the giant conspiracy that led to it. They will after the hearings and it will get their attention. Of course the hardcore Trump voters won't care, believe it, so what? Fuck them. The majority of the American people are going to care.
The committee is going to continue their investigation after the hearings. New information is coming in everyday. The Democrats, the committee, need to sell this story, this crime, to the people and the news media. They must make this the number one news story in the country and keep it there.
They must pressure Garland to act.

(25,292 posts)actually having persons of interest - interviewed under oath.
I feel that the American Public have to see the actors of this coup - up close and personal - in order to believe the narrative this committee will lay out before us.
Even if these actors of this coup choose to take the 5th A - that will have some impact to the extent that it will look like they are hiding something. It will become real.
Otherwise - if it is just the committee weaving a narrative - the other side will just deny, deny, deny - and say that this is a political witch hunt.
I'm afraid that like the impeachment trials - we'll get all worked up about the hearings and then be disappointed in the end - when nothing of substance (and by substance I mean accountability) happens.

(4,913 posts)The committee has done an amazing amount of work in a short period of time. They have the goods and I believe they are going to handle the open hearings, present the evidence in the best possible way. They are well aware of what happened during the Mueller presentation and the impeachment trials.

(1,927 posts)Or care. Summer is coming, most have quit caring about the pandemic and are ready to travel and do the normal summer stuff. Few are going to care about boring Congressional hearings. I wish I was wrong, but I highly doubt your average voter is going to give much thought on this.

(4,913 posts)It will get their attention. It will get their attention like the OJ trial. This is going to be big. A president, his administration being charged with trying to overthrow an election, our country.
