if Roe is "officially" killed in June, are a million or so of us pissed off sign-totin' Democrats going to rally in DC?
Will we stream from Lafayette Park to the Supreme Court Building?

(5,917 posts)Marches and protests happen in city centers, which are already deep blue
And the Pubs know it.
Any utility is limited to the ability to rally our base and fire us up for fundraising and turnout.
So the certainly don't hurt, but their impact is limited

Others helped support unions, spotlight Tea Party extremists and elect Barack Obama. But, some fizzled embarrassingly because only a handful of people attended.
The largest I took part in was the "Women's March" on 1-21-17. I think the million who packed the Mall on that day told the nation that a lot of us viscerally disliked Trump. It is impossible to prove what effects that had, but I believe it led to nationwide activism which won the House in the next mid-terms and ultimately defeated Trump in 2020.
There are no guarantees if we protest, but I think I can guarantee that staying home won't help.

(68,926 posts). . . . we were there too. Instead of cheering and hooting, I engaged a dozen or so young 20-something women by encouraging them to run for public office.
I got a few "you think I could?" responses leading to a longer conversation.
One on one connections in the middle of a great, cheering mass of like minded people.
We, too, have done such rallies and marches for decades but THAT one was special.

If these young kids can't get their collective asses to the polls then it is all up for ground grabs and they can try to locate an actual, old-fashioned, non-plastic coat hanger and do some googling. They could begin with Frank Sinatra's mom.

(40,313 posts)As a matter of fact, it won't really matter how many of us "old farts" are protesting, because this is a really young-person's fight now. We can make suggestions on how to organize it, but we Boomers don't have a dog in this hunt.
It's time for us to pass the torch, at least on this issue. I won't walk away from it, but I'll let the young 'uns lead this.

(40,313 posts)My point is that the energy of pro-choice protest has to be coming from the younger generation. If they don't care enough to engage - and I believe they DO CARE - then maybe we olds should sit this one out.
I'm way past my child-bearing years, but I come from a large family with many in the younger generation, especially nieces and younger cousins. It's always personal, but this pro-choice protest needs to be taken up country-wide.

(7,638 posts)Might be more appropriate now. I like the women's strike. Men should strike in unison as well. What would happen if the whole country shut down for a week or so?
