There have been endless lists of the dire consequences that would result from a Romney win. Everything from the defeat of Roe v. Wade to more endless war. However I heard of another consequence that seems (at least to me) to be far more damaging to our Democracy.
I must credit Ron Reagan for this subtle observation. He was being interviewed the other day (I think it was Hardball) and basically said this...
Considering the over the top lies that have been told by the Romney campaign over and over again...shameless lies that are so obvious that one has to wonder how they get away with it...just consider what will happen if he actually wins. All future campaigns will follow suit...if you can tell blatant lies and not only get away with it, but win, no future campaign could resist. The integrity bar will have been lowered considerably. If you think all politicians lie now, you ain't seen nothing yet.
I don't know about you, but I find this possibility frightening. Is this possible because of the so-called "low information" voter?
Regardless, I don't think our country can survive another quantum drop in what remains of our trust in the political process.

(978 posts)I can't believe my Republican friends and family are buying into the lies. People who I thought were smart.
For some reason they are completely blinded by Romney's lies.
Which leads me to believe it has to be something else. I'm beginning to believe they aren't voting for Romney, they are voting against Obama because they despise him. And I still don't understand the deep seated hatred towards Obama.
But yea, the blatant lies. The Jeep thing in China especially. The Romney campaign, despite being told their claim that their ad is a lie about building Jeeps in China is still showing the ad. They are simply trying to throw whatever lies they can get out there to presuade people to vote.
I really hope people are smarter than that but I think half the country is just plain clueless.

(2,404 posts)I essentially had the same conversation with my wife concerning voting FOR someone and voting AGAINST someone. It's funny how the initial discussion led to this. We concluded that people were not voting for Romney...they are voting against Obama (as you suggest). The hatred towards Obama must be so intense that it would explain many strange and unanticipated features of this election.
Among other things, I am ashamed to say that my wife and I concluded that it was a matter of racism. I mean, I hate to say it, but I can think of no other reason,

(2,404 posts)In some ways, I see the coming of a perfect storm. The crazy RW combined with the racism and the obvious taunting by certain pendants. Not to mention the polling (sort of indirect taunting) which seems to be setting up some sort of "outrage" by the Right when Obama is re-elected. Does that make any sense? LOL

(2,404 posts)Yet another area that will be overlooked.
I'm just afraid that people will just not give a damn. They will just shrug their shoulders and write it off as the nature of politics.

(47,482 posts)We already know the consequences that result when elected officials aren't held accountable for their actions (eight years of the Bush administration), people say, "Well that other guy got away with it, what the hell". Once politicians realize there are no rules anymore for anybody, the world as we know could be gone forever.
Edit to say:
