The nation is all a-twitter about the Supreme Court's decision to destroy the right of women to manage their own bodies. Comments on the overturning of Roe are now worried about the likelihood of the Court overturning other rights: the right to use contraception (Griswold v. Connecticut); same-gender marriage (Obergefell v. Hodges); the right to marry a person of another race (Loving v. Virginia); and every other right not in the Constitution as it was originally approved in 1788.
This move by the Court to destroy Roe -- buttressed by three "justices" who lied in their confirmation hearings -- makes it clear that many of the rights we take for granted are in danger.
I'm reminded of the words of Reverend Martin Niemöller.
Niemöller (18921984) was a prominent Lutheran pastor in Germany. He emerged as an outspoken public foe of Adolf Hitler and spent the last seven years of Nazi rule in concentration camps. He is perhaps best remembered for his postwar words,
First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak outbecause I was not a socialist.
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak outbecause I was not a Jew.
Then they came for meand there was no one left to speak for me.

(18,412 posts)First they came for the LBTQ, and I cheered, because I hate LBTQ.
Then they came for the non-white, and I cheered, because I hate non-whites.
Then they came for the women, and I cheered, because I hate women.
Now they're coming for me, but I don't understand: I voted for Trump!

(40,915 posts)Those millions of republicans want an authoritarian gov't but they mistakenly think they will be the few thousand elites actually in charge.
Those millions are useful tools for those who will actually be in charge.
One poster called it a 'new social feudalism age'.

(63,221 posts)I have predicted this for a long time (past 20 years) and I hope I am wrong, but so far, I haven't been. It has played out exactly the way I said it would and we won't understand until we are "disappeared" in the middle of the night.
Niemöller's words have never carried more weight than they have since WWII, and now they are meaningful again.

(12,490 posts)Women back then we're kept at home popping out baby after baby. If they took a job for the good of the country, it wasn't to lead to a career and they still had to clean, cook and pop out babies. Women were honored by Nazis and churches alike for being passive incubators who were shunned for having sexual pleasure or desires. Pure little virgins until a man took them and told them what to do.
Just saying this Lutheran pastor probably supported that attitude towards women and it never dawned on him how abusive it was.

(5,252 posts)they had been decided based on interpretations of the 14th ammendment. For instance, I know that children born in the US are automatically granted US citizenship, even if the parents are in the US illegally, because of an interpretation of the 14th ammendment. Can THAT be overruled, because granting citizenship to the children of undumented parents is not "deeply rooted in the Nations history and traditions"??

(25,355 posts)a confrontation for decades. It has intensified since the political and personal attacks on the Clinton administration, like the absurd claims that the Clintons were murdering people, the rise in RW hate groups and arms sales during that time, the Hillary bashing.
The Bush II years were so oppressive that Stephen King based a novel on them with the analogy of a giant dome encasing people. The way that Bush was appointed by the SC was blatantly a judicial/political coup.
The election of a liberal Black president threw the RWers over the top.
As the polarization increased, the RW craziness, fanaticism, and hate increased exponentially. Russian interference and placement of Trump in the White House expedited the direction we were going in, but it started before then.
As we push back, the right wing fanaticism will boil over. A physical confrontation seems almost inevitable at this point. It might begin with a RW attack like J6. It might begin with left wing pushback. But it will take someone with extraordinary ability to head it off right now.

(883 posts)It is from fascism. But the line in the poem is communists not socialists. The socialists fought against the communists. Also after wwll the American government brought them over to help fight the red scare. Probably why the Republicans, some of our military and police have fascist tendencies.

(25,355 posts)According to this article, Nazism (national socialism) is a form of fascism.
Regarding the importation of Nazis to the US to fight communism, we also specifically recruited Nazi spies to help in establishing the CIA.
