Omaha firm ES&S plans for the worst on Election Day: No power

If polling places along the East Coast are without power on Election Day, an Omaha company faces a powerful test.

With much of the coast bracing for damage and prolonged power outages from the storm called Sandy, election officials and providers of voting equipment, including Omaha-based Electronic Systems & Software, spent Monday hashing out contingency plans, backup contingency plans and backup-backup contingency plans in case polling places remain without power on Nov. 6.

ES&S, the nation's largest provider of voting equipment and software, has contracts with counties in states all along the Eastern Seaboard, including New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Virginia and Washington, D.C. Overall, the company will collect, process and report ballots from 4,000 counties in 41 states, including in Nebraska and Iowa.

ES&S has 450 employees, and more than half of them are in the Omaha headquarters at 11208 John Galt Blvd.

She explained that the land from 108th Street to 120th, L Street to Q was once a farm owned by her father’s late cousin, Ron Abboud. Abboud, a real estate developer, subdivided the property in the late 1960s and early 1970s, she said.

“In the process, he named John Galt Boulevard for the character in Ayn Rand’s novel ‘Atlas Shrugged,’ one of his favorite books!” Vigneri e-mailed.

Of course, the City Council must approve the naming of all city streets, but I’m told developers often suggest names that the council later signs off on.

Two other callers, people close to Abboud, said the same thing as Vigneri about how John Galt Boulevard got its name.

There are many optical scan boxes out there that should still work. (paper ballot is scanned as it is fed into the locked box) Many of those system were pushed aside for the current back box systems.

all the people in the eye of the strom. Don't think I am cold hearted. Don't get me wrong and chew me out but they won't be able to vote. They have already canceled early voting in most areas (with good reason)and are going to move some polls. It just adds to the already somber mood......

If electricity is not restored by election day to run the machines or light the polling places, a court order should be obtained to extend voting until it is possible to vote. This big a disaster cannot be allowed to disenfranchise millions of voters.

Jeebus H. Chryst on a cracker. The RepubliWankers are rubbing America's face in their evil electoral shit.

Why is the spectre of John Galt and his fleshy Republican cabal of bureaucratic minions running the highly profitable, occult enshrouded US election "verification" system, Inc. (R) ?

WTF?
