Christie praises Obama, doesnt give a damn about Romney photo op
...................................
Fox News co-host Steve Doocy wondered when Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney was going to get some of the same benefits from the hurricane with a photo op in disaster-stricken New Jersey towns.
Over the last couple of months, you have appeared throughout the country, Governor, on behalf of Mitt Romney, Doocy remarked to Christie. We hear that perhaps Mr. Romney may do some storm-related events. Is there any possibility that Gov. Romney may go to New Jersey to tour some of the damage with you?
I have no idea, nor am I the least bit concerned or interested, Christie replied, immediately shutting down the idea. Ive got a job to do here in New Jersey thats much bigger than presidential politics and I could (sic) care less about any of that stuff.
I have a job to do, he added. Ive got 2.4 million people out of power, Ive got devastation on the shore, Ive got floods in the northern part of my state. If you think right now I give a damn about presidential politics then you dont know me.

I'm no Christie fan by any stretch of the imagination. But I'll give him credit when credit is due. Just like Haley Barbour (initially, at least) in Mississipi after Katrina.

he is like the POTUS and sees doing his job as more important than politics.

(1,214 posts)I understand people don't like Christie, but honestly, why criticize him when he's handling a catastrophe? It just makes folks look petty. People's lives are depending him to do the right thing and he's trying to. So imo it's the time to put politics aside.
.99center
(1,237 posts)criticize and distort the the actions of Atlantic City Mayor Lorenzo Langford during the peak of the catastrophe? And with the history of the feud between them it's hard to see Christie's actions as anything but political.
Madam Mossfern
(2,340 posts)He was rightly pissed that the mayor would shirk his duty, just to thumb his nose at Christie.
It goes both ways, you see. Except in this case people's live were at stake and Atlantic City was the site of landfall - ground zero.

(1,237 posts)Was it when he told the people that ignored his evacuation order to take cover when there wasn't enough time to leave safely? Would Christie prefer those that refused or didn't have the means to leave to not take cover? Maybe the mayor should of told the people who were making a last ditch effort to leave when it was already to late "you're on your own" and watched as people tried to evacuate during the hurricane.
erpowers
(9,350 posts)The problem those who are criticizing Chris Christie have is that they think he is not putting politics aside. The people who are criticizing Christie are not being petty. They think the only reason he does not want to do photo ops with Mitt Romney is that he (Christie) wants to run in 2016.

(2,596 posts)It was reinforced when he started praising Obama's responsiveness to providing Federal aid. I think it was yesterday and maybe the day before that some of these repug governors along the coast were posturing and telling Obama that they didn't need the Feds' help with this - shutup and stay the hell out of their states essentially - and Christie stepped up and as much as told these idiots to sit down and STFU.
I don't know what's gonna happen next week. Maybe we'll be treated to the mittster by all the fucking idiots that actually believe they don't need no stinkin Federal gubbinment. If so, they'll have gotten the gubbinment they deserve since they just luuurved being bent over and FUTA regularly by the rethugs. I'm just sorry that I'm gonna be bent over the barrel with them. I hope for the alternative but I'm losing optimism.

(999 posts)I am no fan of Chris Christie however that being said he is the Governor of a State that just got hit by a hurricane for the first time in one hundred years. Leave to the fox cohost to try and make a political situation out of a natural disaster. Fox and Friends is a waste of oxygen. Obama told the governors of the states that were going to be hit to be prepared and for the most part they listened. The Tea Party cannot and would not help these people and Christie knows it. Let Christie run for President is 2016. If Obama has a good 2nd term he will be pissing in the wind anyway. Obama showed what leadership is. He was direct and forceful in his annoucement yesterday and he had FEMA ready to go. He was not in a hanger eating cake while the levies broke.

That is going to leave a mark.

(2,730 posts)Christie is admitting he can't do it alone. He needs help for the U.S. Government. It destroys the go it alone argument and State's Rights only. Reality smacked him in the face. The President just can't be a Businessman. President Obama is a President, not a businessman. Mitt is a good businessman but his other qualifications is lacking.

Within the limits of his political perspective, I think Christie is not a bad governor (no stoning, please), and, given his varying but still surprisingly high approval ratings, it looks like quite a few dems in NJ think soo as well. As I mentioned elesewhere, after I heard his comments about the muslim judge he nominated for NJ Supreme Court, I will always have at least some level of respect for him.

(163 posts)...on DU.
But Christie will run in 2016 - that seems pretty clear. And we'd best be working on him for the next four years, come what may. Because he's the most formidable opponent the Dems are likely to encounter.
He will peel off the independent voters like a chimpanzee with a banana, with his straight-talking bullshit. And his (odious) fiscal record will appeal to what will remain of the Teabaggers, without question.
I expect he'll disappear on 'vacation' in the next year or two, for some high-tech weight loss therapy at somewhere like Mayo - and surface a hundred pounds lighter.
Make no mistake about him - he's coming like a freight train. Hillary could probably deal with him, one on one (but she'll be 70 in 2016 - will she run? Really?). I'm not so sure about Elizabeth Warren.

(163 posts)But my only prediction was that Christie would run. We'll see.
I'm not so sure about Jeb Bush - especially if Obama is re-elected, and completes his righting of the ship of state so trashed by Bush 43.
I'm not so sure about Ryan in 2016, either. He'll probably manage to keep his House seat this year - but again, if Obama is re-elected, I don't see him retaining his seat in 2014. Makes it tough...

(978 posts)Our daughter called from Rutgers University very upset last night because at 1:00 am they woke up the kids out of the rooms to leave their dorms because the power went off so she wants to come home. She can if she wants because she has her car there but some of the roads are impassable including the main one out to get to the Jersey Turnpike. It's a 3 hour drive to home and could end up being more.
But since my daughter is temporary resident of NJ, I'm relieved to know that Christie takes this situation seriously and that between midnight last night and 2 am efforts were being working out to declare NJ a disaster area which could speed up the process to get thing back to normal.
To me that means both Obama and Christie they are taking this seriously and looking out for their citizens.
I just wish Rutgers could have been a bit more civil to the kids about leaving the dorms and their stuff at that late hour.

(4,835 posts)Kind of puts all of his 'austerity speak' on hold while they rebuild the state.
The rate of unemployment in New Jersey is going to dip seriously from this in the coming months.
Watch him take credit for all of the job creation. Even though it will be because of federal emergency disaster relief. They will be rebuilding roads, bridges, levees... The jobs bill that the republican controlled congress refused America; granted to New Jersey.
This is gonna make Christie look like a political genius. It's time to start pointing that out; this is how economics works. New Jersey will not succeed because of his policies, but rather; because he was governor of a state that was hit by a hurricane when a responsible president was in office.
All that Christie deserves credit for is accepting assistance. Very heroic indeed. He knows what's going on. Give him a year to start taking credit for how his greatness as governor has created more jobs in New Jersey than any other state.
