He was actually tied or up in the polls until that "disaster" happened. Then he canceled his campaign and went back to Washington to "lead" the effort to save our country from the fallout of the disaster.
But, in the process, he looked incompetent and Obama looked like the leader. Many believe that the election turned around at that point?
Now, we have Mitt Romney in a similar situation with a different "disaster". I think he is treading on shaky ground. If he comes across like McCain in his attempt to show he is "leading" the country in this dire time, it could swing the entire election to Obama. A very dangerous time for the Romney campaign, in my opinion. Because he cannot defeat Obama when it comes to "leadership".
