I'm having a hard time trying to comprehend what's about to happen. Will 70% of Americans tolerate Republicans turning us into the Republic of Gilead or Nazi Germany?
It feels like Civil War is inevitable to me. I honestly think we need to reform as separate countries, but I know that's not a popular opinion.

(4,575 posts)once in a while. Fascism is such a big picture concept that I don't know that some fully get it or are just too damn tired from working to be concerned with it. And now organized religion is in on it. People think social media is some sort of encyclopedia. That's Putin's doing. At least we are seeing the beginning of the end of hm I hope.

(9,067 posts)Then there are those who actually want it because they think it will benefit them....they shouldn't count on that because the people at the top will devour those trying to get to the top or are also at the top.

(36,788 posts)Those millions of republicans want an authoritarian gov't but they mistakenly think they will be the few thousand elites actually in charge.
Those millions are useful tools for those who will actually be in charge.
One poster called it a 'new social feudalism age'.

(3,213 posts)None of those repugs are being held accountable. Not a single one of Trump's team has been arrested. Navarro still hasn't been charged. Meadows still not charged. No Republicans in Congress charged.

Apparently the saying is of uncertain origin (i.e. not Sinclair Lewis after all) but it endures because it is so true.

(5,640 posts)There are some famous quotes that allude to a similar sentiment, as you stated it is not Sinclair Lewis (a book I own and have read).
The most relevant and truthful quote is in John Thomas Flynns As We Go Marching, published in 1944.
But when fascism comes it will not be in the form of an anti-American movement or pro-Hitler bund, practicing disloyalty. Nor will it come in the form of a crusade against war. It will appear rather in the luminous robes of flaming patriotism; it will take some genuinely indigenous shape and color, and it will spread only because its leaders, who are not yet visible, will know how to locate the great springs of public opinion and desire and the streams of thought that flow from them and will know how to attract to their banners leaders who can command the support of the controlling minorities in American public life. The danger lies not so much in the would-be Fuhrers who may arise, but in the presence in our midst of certainly deeply running currents of hope and appetite and opinion. The war upon fascism must be begun there.
This paragraph by Flynn is extremely unsettling in it's accuracy.

before even DARPA was born, much less the Internet. It was something my dear old mother said more than once to me. She was also of the opinion that we wouldnt lose our country to an invasion, but that we would vote the enemy in.
RIP, Mom. Im glad you didnt have to live to see Trump.

(24,223 posts)The book examines the history of fascism and, based on the growth of big business and big government, describes possible political scenarios for a future United States.[1][2][3] According to a 1981 review in the journal Crime and Social Justice, the book is described as "timely" on a subject requiring serious consideration and is about the dangers of fascism, focusing primarily on the United States, but being aware that monopoly capitalism needs to be understood internationally since capitalism "is not a national mode of production".[4]
In 2016, the book prompted the following response right after Donald Trump was elected President of the United States: "The next wave of fascists will not come with cattle cars and concentration camps, but they'll come with a smiley face and maybe a TV show. [...] That's how the 21st-century fascists will essentially take over".[5]
