Florida Early Voters Show Up in Huge Numbers Despite Suppression Effort

http://m.colorlines.com/archives/2012/10/souls_to_the_polls_winning_in_florida.html

As the St. John Progressive Missionary Baptist Church vans pulled up to the C. Blythe Andrews library polling place to let congregants out to vote, a line already snaked out the voting entrance. A table was set up on one end of the libary’s parking lot where volunteers served fried fish and hush puppies. A DJ blared gospel music that could be heard blocks away. It was after-church Sunday, the first and only Sunday of “Souls to the Polls” in most of Florida, and the second day of early voting. Here in Tampa, early voters, and black voters in particular had already made their statement.

Despite setbacks such as Gov. Rick Scott’s HB 1355, which undercut voter registration drives, reinstated harsh felony voting restrictions and his notorious purge program, voters turned out in record numbers this past weekend: over a half-million people cast early votes statewide by Monday morning. In Hillsborough County, 36,702 early votes Saturday and Sunday—roughly 2,500 of those cast at the C. Blythe Andrews site in Tampa’s historically black College Hill neighborhood. As of last night, over 55,000 voted early.

These numbers far outweighed the historic 2008 election here, when less than 17,000 turned out for the first weekend of early voting, 1,248 at Andrews (then called College Hill Library). Back then, those were considered remarkable numbers. This year, they’ve almost doubled that, despite the odds against them.

After dismal voter turnout numbers in 2010, the year Scott was elected, Get Out The Vote advocates re-tooled and put together an aggressive canvassing strategy that made sure people were registered and “knew their status”—making sure their address was updated, and that any felony convictions were cleared up. In 2008, African-American voters were self-motivated, hype about the prospect of not only electing the first black president, but also finally undoing the eight years of economic and political ruin of George W. Bush.

So good to see people implementing GOTV programs. This is what it's all about. Getting people enfranchised, invested and involved. Imagine what a difference this could make during primary season if it keeps up.

My wife and I voted in South Florida yesterday. About one hour on line, majority pro-Obama. We're going to need this majority in S. florida in order to counter North Florida.

Signs at my parent's neighborhood in Gainesville were 2/3 to 3/4 Obama over Romney. Tallahassee is another blue stronghold, as is Volusia County. Jacksonville--traditionally viewed as a conservative military city--nearly went Obama in 2008 and recently elected an African American Democratic mayor.

So while turnout is excellent and higher then last year for the first weekend, we had two weekends last year which may equal the numbers out a bit once everything is totaled up. But I'm still pleased to see this record turnout. Also, the Dems pushed early vote by mail and I know of a lot more people who are doing absentee this year then last year- all of whom are Obama supporters.

Not clear yet if Florida is really still in play for us. Still VERY concerned about those machines- a 3 point lead will probably not result in an Obama win due to the percentage skimmed off the machines in most districts by the GOP who own them. Plus, I worry they will throw out many of the absentee ballots for various absurd reasons (which they are known to do). Happy to be hopeful but am hopefully concerned....

Not just for this extremely important election, but many more to come. So many people don't bother voting, many because they think it doesn't matter... these people know it does and I hope to see more and more of that all over this country.
