"Unprecedented" damage to New York City's power and transport grid won't be easy to fix.

Mayor Bloomberg said at a press conference that he guesses it will take 3-4 days to bring power fully back online; 4-5 days to fix the subways.

There are currently 750,000 New Yorkers without power.

"Our administration will move heaven and earth to help [Con Ed and the MTA]," said Bloomberg.

That 4-5 day estimate will apply to bringing parts of the system back on line. It will take far longer to bring the system back 100%.

and only offered the 4-5 days comment as a response to a question by a reporter for a 'guess'.

I really hope it is true, but I have this nagging fear that the subways will be out longer. It's great that they had moved all the actual subway cars out of the tunnels so they didn't get damaged, but until they give more specific info it is still sort of an unknown.

I hope my fears are wrong - I am just thinking about the millions of working people who rely on this to get to their hourly jobs, who cannot afford to miss a day let alone a week of work, who may also be suffering from other loss and damage or costs or injuries due to the storm.

Ugh, for whatever reason this is what I am stuck on.

On an emergency kit in NYC. I had this argument with a couple folks here on DU. Unfortunately they just got that lesson

Recently, I found an invention called a grill.
It uses coals to cook food.
As a first responder, I thought you might find this tidbit of info useful.
