1. Yes, that is by design. The Senate as not intended to be proportional

I'm not sure why so many struggle with this.

The bicameral structure was intended to slow change by requiring broad acceptance by both population and region to get something passed.

Given the precedence of stupidity in this country, I'm not sure I'd want it to be easier to make sweeping change anymore. Whatever we do to clear the road for ourselves only makes it easier for the right to eventually push it all back and then some.

2. Back in the day, voters didn't even vote for senators.

The state legislature did. Maybe going back to that would stop the confusion of how the senate operates.

One acre, one vote?

It's a bit abstruse to pretend that a state has some interest of its anthropomorphized own that is somehow separable from the interests of the people who live there.

I wonder if there could have been some other factor at work in setting up the antidemocratic nature of the senate? Whatever could have been going on at the time of the founding that would require disproportionate representation to protect less-populated states?

It's right on the tip of my tongue...

VA was the most populous state in 1791 - regardless of if slaves were counted. They were the poster child of the large state that they were afraid would dominate. PA andNY were next.

The small fries being protected? Delaware, New Hampshire, and Georgia.

Perhaps democrats should be making more effort to win over rural voters. It used to be, not long ago, that coal mining counties we heavy democratic leans. Same for many other rural and blue color industries.

Sure, union busting helped weaken that but we did ourselves no favors with policy priorities we took.

If we want to compete in these places, we need more Joe Manchins. But this board seems they would rather have more Rand Paul's instead.

Also, be careful what we wish for. I'd be interested to see what Texas and Florida would send if they suddenly had a bunch of extra Senate seats to fill.

Instead of changing the rules we should find ways to lesses Republican advantage within them.

No fucknation without representation.

It is galling to see how little representation we have.

2/3 of the House and Senate and 38 states to ratify.

No chance.

Period.

Only way that 57 percent will ever get away from this imbalance is exiting the republic.

That’s just the cold hard truth.
