The campaign is loading supplies into a campaign bus for delivery in Virginia.

Geez. Why not hurricane ravaged Iowa or Colorado?
New Jersey saw some severe damage. And New York city, of course. And Pennsylvania has a lot of people without power... and CT got roughed up pretty good.
Oh, sorry. Those are Blue states.
Virginia was largely unaffected. The worst we got was heavy snow in the mountain west, but West Virginia got that much worse. Oh, sorry... West Virginia is not in play in the election.
Romney is coming to Doswell, Virginia on Thursday. Doswell is home to the Kings Dominion theme park. About 80 miles south of DC on 95. Like nearby Richmond, Doswell Virginia was devastated by Sandy, pummeled by wind gusts as powerful as 40 MPH at the height of the horror... the living will envy the dead, etc. (Local officials showed a stuff upper lip in the face of the nightmare, saying brave things like, "We got off pretty light." And, "There was no significant damage."
I cannot imagine where they will find Hurricaine victimes in Doswell, Virginia. Will they actually bus in victims from elsewhere to hand them $0.50 worth of Ramen noodles on TV?
I know my criticism may seem too harsh. C'mon... Romney wouldn't do that. Fake disaster aid rushed to a town that wasn't hit? Impossible. That would just be silly... it would be like washing clean pans at a soup kitchen.
"loading supplies into a campaign bus..."
This isn't fucking Dunkirk, or the Parisian taxi brigade rushing men to the Marne. The Romney campaign bus has not been commandeered for service in disaster relief.
The campaign bus is being loaded up with swag from the dollar store to give out to Romney supporters at campaign events. One can only hope they are dumb enough to put Romney stickers on the stuff.
I hate to be so cynical, but anything anyone gives Romney to distribute to Romney supporters at a Romney campaign event in a largely unaffected Virginia town is a CAMPAIGN CONTRIBUTION and should be treated as such.

(25,415 posts)NYC and and NJ were the most devastated areas. Followed by the CT shoreline. But we aren't that important out here in blue state land.

(9,808 posts)The practical side is that it's nigh impossible for even a wealthy, influential * Private Citizen * like Romney to get into the hardest hit areas.
If he truly wanted to help, he'd write a big check, get his donors to do the same, then sit on his hands and zip his lips.

(25,699 posts)If this dude's going to be going to a single swing state, and passing out cans of hormel chili from his campaign bus, and hanging his campaign logo over everything, yes, I question his motive very, very much. As you say, he could write a goddamn check, but hey, he'd rather pass on canned goods from one poor person to another poor person, while claiming the credit for it.
The guy is a shart.

(9,808 posts)I'm convinced he's doing it for political gain. But why Virginia? Because even if he could get in to the most devastated areas, Mittens wouldn't risk his manicure or having to associate with the great unwashed. He might see something that would trouble his beautiful little mind.
His motive is to score political points, make himself looks good... But actually doing something useful? Yeah, right. When pigs fly.
We are in violent agreement, I think.

(42,290 posts)Listen, if your home is destroyed, you've got no power and running out of food, the LAST place you're going to go is to a fucking Mitt Romney photo op.
If he REALLY wanted to contribute, he'd donate a fraction of his VAST wealth to an organization already on the ground that's assessing people's REAL needs.
What a fake. What a fraud. And they accuse US of being cynical.
