I've seen where this kind of hateful rhetoric goes and it never ends well. Fuck these fucking assholes.

See the documentary Shut Up and Sing.
They dont, however, have the right to incite violence.

(2,343 posts)I just wish they chose not to express it constantly. I don't want politics mixed with all my entertainment, especially when I don't agree with it.
I'm all for free speech, even with speech I find quite offensive.

(26,714 posts)what's the cut off, profession-wise when people should "shut up and (insert job here)? Would a regional theater actor be OK to express political opinions? Then once they've achieved fame and success," shut up and act"? How about college sports? Students constantly demonstrate and become involved in political causes. What's the cut off there? Once they play for a professional league. Is it "shut up and play" time then? What if they're a bench warmer for a season? But start getting more famous the following.
Could you provide us a chart?

(2,343 posts)I disagree politically with many of the artists I've seen in concert.
You are conflating my preference for artists not being political DURING a performance with their free speech rights any other time. Of course, during a performance, they have just as much free speech rights as any other time. I just prefer they don't get political, even if I agree with them. Early in Obama's first term, we went to see Martina McBride. Trace Adkins was a co-headliner. Half his speaking between songs was anti-Obama. Yes, shut up and sing.
We went to see Lily Tomlin a few years back. She seems to be to to my left a bit, but we largely agree as far as I can tell. I've always thought she was funny and looked forward to her show at our local arts center. It was during George Bush's presidency. She constantly harped on his admin, even working jabs into some of her classics. Very little of the show was funny. She ruined it being political.
Just a couple examples of what I'm talking about.

(26,714 posts)all over the place. This was a political rally not DURING a performance. Which you just added as a way to move the goal posts. Unless I missed something in your two replies above. There was no caveats DURING performances. If you wanna say that now, great. But your original statements were pretty broad.
This whole "shut up and whatever" has been nothing but another right wing grievance brought to us by the only party who's elevated 2 shitty entertainers to the WH. Apparently with zero sense of irony about it.

(1,392 posts)but whenever they get any half-assed, cut rate celebrity that takes their side, they give them endless prime time exposure. They had Clint Eastwood talking to a chair as their keynote address (and he's 100 times saner than the psychopaths that back them now).

(841 posts)Artists are people. People who are paying attention tend to have opinions and ideals and political hopes. Nugent's happens to be vile garbage, but I don't subscribe to the "stay in your lane" approach to managing artists' ideologies. I wish his were morally stronger but do think he should get to spout his nonsense to his people.

The real irony is that they all spend so much time playing the victim while behaving this way.
