Does it make my butt look too big?
Seriously though, it doesn't happen often, but I think this one is for the times.
"It's a poor academic who does not take human suffering into account. The conservative Supremes can extrapolate abstract concepts to the moon, but the flaw in their reasoning will become apparent when people start turning blue in the face from the lack of oxygen."

(9,073 posts)There's an apocryphal story about Catherine meeting with the great contemporary philosopher Diderot, author of the Encyclopedie. There are a lot of versions of the quote, but it basically goes, "While you write on unfeeling paper, I write on human skin, which is far more ticklish.
People come up with all kinds of ideas, policies, academic ideologies, and general nonsense while ensconced in the undemanding and insulated walls of academia. They congratulate themselves with all their forward thinking and newly invented postmodern terms and framings.
But at the end of the day, you have to try it out on actual people. In the real world.
That tends to go much differently.
If the ideas do not work in the real world and have no chance of being workable outside of academia, then all those words and faux superior posturings are little more than pseudo intellectual masturbation.
Reminds me of earlier today. Read about "hegemonic masculinity." All I could think of was the over-degreed person who coined the phrase and whether or not they high fived themselves after thinking it. No human being on earth will ever use that term unless they have a hand straight down their ideological pants. Not helpful. Not useful. Not applicable. Totally disconnected from earth.
