The Turkish president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, has said he will not approve Finland and Sweden joining Nato.
Reuters is reporting he has said Swedish and Finnish delegations should not bother coming to Turkey to convince Turkey to approve their Nato bids.
Finland and Sweden, while both Nato partners, have long viewed membership as an unnecessary provocation of Russia, their powerful eastern neighbor. Moscows invasion of Ukraine, however, has led to a radical rethink of their security policies.
Membership of Nato would require ratification by all existing members.
Erdoğan is a putin puppet just like tRump

I'd rather have Finland and Sweden than Erdogan and his ilk.

That has probably disadvantaged Russia; even under non-war rules, countries that don't have a Black Sea coastline are limited in the number of ships they can move there, so Russia would have potentially been able to move more through.

Oh sorry. The fact that their two best ships are swimming with the fishes, compliments of Ukraine, I kind of had a problem visualizing a Russian naval tsunami.

Replace them with Sweden and Norway and put Erdoğan on notice that ANY military move against NATO will result in his anihiliation.

(8,657 posts)Since Erdogan took over, the whole country has changed it is literally a Russian money pit these days. Erdogan and Putin are best buddies. The whole southern coast and majority of seaside resorts are Russian enclaves. The flights have not stopped from Russia to Turkey at all. Antalya is literally a Russian city these days.
They are not a reliable real ally and NATO knows it.
NATO do not trust them one bit.
Turkey joined NATO is 1952, they were enthusiastically pro west back then and very relaxed but a lot has happened since then but when Erdogan took over the situation changed dramatically, the relationship became very strained and difficult due to Erdogan's loyalties.

(40,834 posts)Turkey wants our gear (F16s eg). Turkey doesnt want to trade access to our military technology for tighter relations with the corpse of the USSR. Erdogan is saying he doesnt want to hear from Sweden and Finland. I imagine hell pick up the phone when we call. Id wager talks will continue.

NATO has had good reason to oust Turkey before this anyway.
