Subject: Hurricane Sandy Aftermath
October 30, 2012
Dear Friend,
As we face our first day of regrouping and rebuilding in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, I want to thank the many individuals who are working tirelessly around the clock to keep the people of our State safe. In Maryland, we prepared for the worst, and we were fortunate to miss the brunt of this violent storm. However, many towns and neighborhoods across the State still experienced considerable damage, so we will be relying on our first responders, our emergency personnel, and all of our citizens to take care of one another in the coming days.
Thank you also to all of our citizens for heeding emergency warnings, and staying off the roads. Your cooperation made a big difference in keeping Marylanders safe, and minimizing dangerous conditions.
There are still about 308,000 Marylanders without power. Utility crews were out at dawn today working to restore power, but we are asking everyone to please be patient. Check on your neighbors, and take care of one another; especially if you are without power.
If you must drive today, please be careful. Remember that there is still debris on the road, and many traffic lights are out. The law states we must treat traffic lights that are out as a four-way stop and come to a complete stop. By noon today, we will have limited core bus service, para-transit service, and subway service restored. By tomorrow morning, all transit services should be operational.
It is imperative that you keep generators outside and ventilated to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning. Do not keep them in garages. Additional power outage tips and shelter information is available through MEMA.
Tomorrow, we will be resuming early voting in Maryland. We will be making up the day that we lost on Monday by adding Friday as an early voting day. We will be making up today by extending early voting hours on the remaining days from 8 AM to 9 PM.
Tomorrows Board of Public Works meeting has been cancelled.
Once again, thank you for coming together and looking out for one another as we make it through the effects of this storm.
Thank you.
Martin O'Malley
Governor
