Color me cynical.
Everyone is aware that many people who know Romney personally, don't like him.
During the 2008 GOP primary, it was well known that John McCain and Mike Huckabee hated Romney well beyond standard political means.
During the 2012 primary, Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich both had a personal dislike of Romney. Although to their credit, both are currently on board with Romney's campaign. But do we doubt they would turn against Romney if they had the opportunity? Currently Ron Paul, the one true friend we thought Romney had during the primaries, has refused to endorse him.
That brings me to Christie.
Governor Christie has been the top spokesperson for Romney. But at the first opportunity to jump ship (pardon the pun), Christie seemingly can't wait to throw Romney and his campaign overboard!
The bottom line is Governor Christie does not want Romney to win. He wants 2016 to be an open election. I think Bobby Gindal does too. If you are Romney, you have to feel as though you have been stabbed in the back. But lets be honest, the guy seems to rub everyone the wrong way.
Romney reminds me of that classic rich guy who is sitting on the psychiatrist's couch and can't answer this one simple question from the doctor...... "Through all of your years of making money, did you ever make any friends?"
Yes, I know the storm is serious.
And yes, I have no doubt Obama is doing an excellent job coordinating the relief effort with Christie.
But it seemed to me that Christie really went out of his way to make sure America new Obama was doing a great job. And he had no problem slamming Romney even on FOX.
Remember, folks, Christie was the keynote speaker at the GOP convention!
Call me cynical, but at the first opportunity, Christie couldn't jump ship from the Romney campaign fast enough.
BTW... I think Christie is telling all of us who is going to win next week.
Think about it. Would Christie be be this cold to Romney if he thought he was going to be President in 2 months? The clean up work and disaster relief effort is going to take years to complete. He will need federal help for the foreseeable future. He will need a President on his side. Governor Christie is a smart man. And we just saw what side he is betting on.

(58,847 posts)He's a Republican governor in a blue state that's in shambles. He can't be seen refusing to cooperate with a Democratic at such a moment or he can forget about a second term, much less a run for president.

So - my answer is that in a perfect world (for him) Rmoney would win, but he knows that he won't, and isn't wasting any time trying to prop him up.

He also has the guys who read precinct maps at the RNC calling him up and looking for their next gig.

(89,250 posts)i think the Primary opponents are waiting for an "i told you so".
the interesting thing is both the conservative wingnuts like santorum and those seen as more moderate like Christie can use a Romney loss as evidence they should be the nominee.
Christie can say Romney ran too far to the right and lost. Santorum can say romney was never realy right wing .
i think reason Christie sat out this election was he knew running against Obama was going to be tough. but that after 8 years of one party in office the other party has more of a chance .

(115,706 posts)Christie is an asshole but he's not an idiot. If (God help us) Romney wins he's the incumbent in 2016. While we can expect a Romney presidency to suck hard enough to bend light, historically it's been almost impossible to wrest a nomination from an incumbent, even one who sucks. So if Christie wants a realistic shot at the GOP nomination in '16, Obama has to win this election. I also think he thinks Obama will win.
So Christie has actually done a politically clever thing by praising Obama's accessibility and his handling of the emergency and claiming he doesn't give a damn about Romney or the election. He will be seen as doing the right thing - doing his job as governor and being willing to put political differences aside to do so. In 2016 he could point to how he put the interests of his state above partisan politics and thus look like a good governor and a reasonable guy.

(3,205 posts)...so that NJ will get the billions in federal aid that they need to rebuild with.
Christie may indeed be an asshole republican, but he's not stupid, and he knows rmoney will cut that aid to nothing, forcing NJ to borrow from the big banks.
