1. Here's the photo-op with no context:A tropical storm, the likes of which the world has never seen, leaves the entire east coast under 5 feet of water with no electricity or drinking water. What do you do? Run inland to the swing state that will determine the election (Ohio) and get a cheap photo-op with shots of you "not being political" by stacking cans of peas into boxes for the poor flood victims, and then make a speech about the little people helping each other...
Looks unbelievably tawdry and opportunistic, doesn't it? Without the context.
2. Here's the photo-op IN context:
You've just spent a year on the campaign trail saying that FEMA should be eliminated, government is a problem not a solution, and we need to drill and mine the crap out of the entire country to burn as much oil and coal as we can possibly get our hands on because GLOBAL WARMING IS FAKE, and there's nothing unusual about the weather patterns.
Then...a week before the election, the biggest hurricane in history wrecks the entire east coast, and people are shivering around a candle in their attics waiting for FEMA to come to the rescue.
What do you do? You can either:
A) Curl up into a fetal position on the floor as every news program re-runs your comments about FEMA, government, and Global Warming over and over again on a continuous loop, or...
B) You can PULL A 'BAGHDAD BOB' and do the photo-op without caring about how ridiculous you look because you basically have no choice.
"There IS no global warming, and we do not need any infidels in Washington helping flood victims. These cans of Green Giant Beans will take care of everything, thank you very much."

(31,464 posts)That would have rounded out the photo op nicely...he could have put an unopened can of peas in a clean pan, pretended to cook them then hand the can of peas to a homeless guy (who was really one his campaign aids), then washed the pan again. BRILLIANT! Tea Baggers are stupid enough to believe it.

(14,040 posts)he somehow, someway needed to seem relevant during this disaster and he isn't. His "storm relief event" hit all the wrong notes today and his refusal to answer questions about FEMA (14 times) doesn't endear him. I think the media is starting to turn on him because of his "donation efforts" and his "event" which was so obviously a rally.

(5,954 posts)but not asked questions. They managed to do that with Ryan, but not Rmoney. Why do I have the feeling that his campaign people are happy to cash their checks, but are just mailing in their performance.

(13,776 posts)Poor Mitt. His past statements and current lack of a single clue have painted him into a corner where nobody trusts his purely humanitarian motivations. It's so sad.
