Think about it this way - Christie doesn't want Romney to win

Being an incumbent President pretty much gives you an advantage when re-elections come around in 4 years. If Romney could feasibly win this election (which he won't) then that means Christie or any other BIG name GOPer that skipped running in 2012 will have to wait until 2020 and some of these guys are getting kinda old.

And I don't think Christie personally likes Romney. Christie is bombastic to say the least. Romney is a weasel. Christie is an overt bully. Romney will be sneaky and steal your cookies behind your back. Neither plays well with others, but one will pretend to while wielding a knife that will cut your grandma off of social security.

He is the republican governor of a blue state.

He is using this opportunity to show that he cares about New Jersey more than politics.

He is up for re-election in 2014 in, as you say, a blue state. He needs more than just repubs voting for him to win and he needs to win re-election because it is much easier to run for President as the repub nominee if you are a successful governor than it is if you were booted out of office.
