ACLU, Planned Parenthood file lawsuit in Florida, saying abortion law violates state constitution

Last edited Wed Jun 1, 2022, 05:35 PM - Edit history (1)

@ACLU

BREAKING: We're suing Florida over their ban on abortion after 15 weeks of pregnancy. The ban also threatens to put doctors in jail for providing essential care beyond that point.

Florida, we’ll see you in court.

The ban would have a devastating effect on abortion access in a state where access is already restricted.

Resulting barriers will force Floridians to remain pregnant against their will, endangering their families, health, and lives.

The Florida state constitution provides broad protections for individual privacy rights — including the right to abortion.

This ban blatantly violates that constitutional right.

We won’t stop fighting for Floridians’ fundamental right to get the care they need.

At most, the legislature can propose an amendment.

Aside from that, they don’t need to change the state constitution. They needed to change the people interpreting it, the state Supreme Court. The state Supreme Court can change precedent. Current precedent says abortion is a right given by the state constitution. That was nearly 30 years ago (IIRC). It’s a different court now.

Mark my words.

(It's nice to see my ACLU donations being put to good use! Right on!)
