First, I think President Biden's speech to the nation was outstanding. I had come to think he would be a good president back in 1988, and have had a good opinion of him ever since. A Senator, Vice President, and now President. This is, in my opinion, the best speech of his career. I'm a proud supporter of Joe Biden.
I wish that issues with guns were not political. But republicans make them so. This leaves us no choice but to expose what damaged human beings republicans are. Along with women's health care and January 6 Committee hearings, we have what we need to defeat republicans come November.
The second issue is Peter Navarro. Last night, I participated on a couple OP/threads about Peter's interview on Ari Melber's show. Malaise posted "Navarro is on Ari right now," which led to an interesting discussion. On post #34, I noted that Ari knew Navarro was going to be indicted, which was why he conducted the interview in the manner that he did.
Keep in mind that Navarro has opted to represent himself in legal dealings with the House Committee. Bad choice. Even a moderately talented attorney would have advised him to stay away from the media -- especially Ari's show, where he had already laid out the Trump cult's plan to overthrow the 2020 election. And Ari played Navarro yet again: ask a few questions, and sit back while Peter runs his mouth.
It seemed obvious that Navarro -- who threatened "revenge" in 2024 -- was under extreme stress. He couldn't shut his mouth. As unattractive as it was, it was a good thing.

We should expect much more of Navarro talking through his foot.
He even spoke outside after his court hearing today. The more he talks, the better!

(115,683 posts)because he didn't used to be like that. He has a Ph.D. in economics from Harvard, and has taught economics at the UC, San Diego the University of San Diego, and UC, Irvine for years and is now a professor emeritus. He used to be a Democrat, and he supported Clinton in 2008. In other words, he had a pretty normal, respectable career for a long time, but something about getting involved in TFG's administration seems to have caused him to jump the rails. He's not super old, born in 1949, but maybe he's lost the plot?

on Melber's show a few weeks ago. He described his plan to overturn the 2020 election vividly. He called it the "Greenbay Sweep." It involved over 100 other people who would put forward alternate slates of EC votes in several states rather than the ones already certified by state authorities and scheduled to be ratified by Pence on J6.
They would be thrown out and the fake ones, sign by republicans (oh the criminal stupidity), and the end result would somehow throw the election into state legislatures, or the House, who knows. It was all so crazy and implausible but Navarro was dead earnest on Ari's show when he describe his obvious complicity in a detailed coup attempt.
Melber even asked him if he didn't understand that he just described his participation in a coup attempt against the US Government.
Navarro didn't seem to understand. Something obviously has happened to his brain since hooking up with the trump cabal.

Navarro is delusional if he thinks this is how things work when there is an indictment for your ass. He already had his chance to cooperate with the Feds.
Im pretty sure his PhD in Economics wont help him much in court. He might have been wiser to get a lawyer. Oh, yea. He said it would take a huge hunk of his retirement to hire a lawyer. Maybe he wont need it so much if he is incarcerated for a few years. The Feds will give him room and board. 😂😂😂

(73,536 posts)the January 6 Committee's first televised hearing in 2022 is next Thursday, June 9, at 8 pm/est. It will definitely be a historic fireworks display.
A lady who was a neighbor I hadn't heard from in 40+ years -- until facebook re-connected us, asked if I thought these hearings would make a difference? I said that I think the three-group model works: A is the cult, and the hearings will not change their thinking (if they ever do think); B is those of us who recognize the threat the cult poses for democracy; and C is the uninformed, but not really interested segment.
Our job is to get Group C to become informed. They will hear or read some of the media reports, even if they don't watch the first hearing. We will have new "talking points," based on the explosive information revealed next Thursday. It is unlikely that any member of Group C will decide they like what happened on January 6, or what's going on in this country.

(73,536 posts)the DU community would start making coordinated efforts in this area. I'm a life-long Democrat, with over half a century in grass roots activism. I've never seen a time when activism is more necessary, but that there have been issues that make victory a sure thing if we all do our best. And our best is coordinated.
I know that some people correctly point out that DU is a small community. But I also remember Malcolm X's teachings about how a powder keg is inert by itself. It requires the smallest part -- the fuse -- to reach its potential. And a coordinated campaign to contact one (or more) representative's office, or a journalist, could easily multiply.

Navarro's problem is his supreme arrogance. When you listen to him, he's convinced this was the greatest plan ever in the history of the world, There's no hint of knowledge that it's criminal. This is the most important thing he's ever done, and it was brilliant and gosh, the laws of this country put a stop to it, and if only people can see how brilliant it is, ... so he'll keep telling us how brilliant the plan is. This is precisely why I think he'll be the first to get convicted. He's convincting himself every time he sees a camera and a microphone. He can't shut up.

While some think the possibility of a large fine and a year in prison per count, his experience in lock up yesterday may make him break.
The court-appointed attorney will likely tell Peter that the House Committee and DOJ already have enough evidence to convict him. A good part of that comes from his media rants, and his book. But an attorney will make clear to him that a heck of a lot of other people have provided evidence of his role.
Looking forward to Thursday's televised hearing!

A LIFE THAT STARTED OUT WITH MUCH PROMISE TOOK RECLUSIVE AND HOSTILE PATH
By Joseph B. Treaster
The New York Times, April 1, 1981
Excerpt
In recent months, Mr. Hinckley's parents reportedly told the investigators, the 25-year-old man had been ''aimlessly wandering'' the country. They had provided psychiatric care, they said in a statement, but medical evaluations had ''alerted no one to the seriousness of his condition.''

In Denver, a friend of Mr. Hinckley's father, John W. Hinckley, who is the president and chairman of the Vanderbilt Energy Corporation, an oil and gas prospecting company with annual revenues of more than $4 million, said the young man had shown an early interest in writing and music.

Early in 1978 Mr. Hinckley went to the Chicago headquarters of the National Socialist Party of America, often referred to as the Nazi Party of America, and was accepted as a member, according to Michael C. Allen, the president-elect of the organization.
The following year, however, the organization refused to renew Mr. Hinckley's membership, Mr. Allen said, because of his ''violent nature.'' 'Talking About Shooting People'
