Fetterman unveils general election ad running on Fox News

Fetterman unveils general election ad running on Fox News

by Caroline Vakil - 06/07/22 7:44 AM ET

Associated Press/Marc Levy
Pennsylvania Lt. Gov. John Fetterman, who is running for the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate, speaks at a Centre County Democrats breakfast event at a hotel at the Mountain View Country Club on Saturday, April 9, 2022, in Boalsburg, Pa.

Pennsylvania Lt. Gov. John Fetterman’s (D) Senate campaign is out with two new general election ads on Tuesday, including one airing on Fox News within the state. The ad on Fox News, which was first reported by Politico, highlights Fetterman’s 20 years living in Pennsylvania and “calls out Washington and career politicians for bad trade deals and fueling the opioid epidemic,” according to his campaign.

“Washington, D.C., attacked towns like this for years. They wrote bad deals that sent away our jobs, approved the drugs that kill our kids. We need help. They just talk,” Braxton White, an army veteran and member of the Clarion Area School District Board, says in the 30-second ad. “Not John Fetterman. For 20 years he’s lived in a place like this — building, pushing, fighting. He’s running for Senate to do the same thing there. Good American jobs, higher wages for us. That’s John,” White adds.

The ad is set to run in the Pennsylvania media markets of Johnstown, Pittsburgh and Scranton on Fox News and on broadcast stations in Johnstown and Altoona, according to his campaign — demonstrating how the progressive Democrat seeks to reach Republican voters in the state as well as those from his own party. Fetterman’s campaign is airing another ad on broadcast channels in Pittsburgh and Scranton that portrays the Senate candidate as a veteran of the state fighting against political outsiders.

“This is a race for the future of every community across Pennsylvania. For every small town or person that’s felt left behind, for every job left and factory closed, for every person that works hard but can’t get ahead as costs keep rising,” Fetterman says in the one-minute ad. “Those decisions were made for us by people that don’t know us, and that’s exactly who we’re running against. Pennsylvania is our home, and it’s worth fighting for.”

He looks like them, dresses like them, and "inks" (tatoos) like them and has eschewed "elitism" (at least as many folks consider that term).

I always go back and post this ad that Gov. Wolf ran when Fetterman was first on the ticket with Wolf during Wolf's re-election bid in 2018. I had never heard of him but this ad cracked me up so that it just showed someone who was "authentic" and who doesn't shy away from "being himself" -

But with Fetterman, although he and Wolf appear to be "opposites", they both came together with similar experiences with liberal-created public service activities - i.e., Wolf served in the Peace Corps and Fetterman served in AmeriCorps and I think that experience allowed them to not only appreciate the value of diversity, but to be able to connect to people on another level.

Trudel and Blount, who served a combined 68 years in prison despite never having taken a life, will visit prisons to assist inmates who are applying and to educate prisoners about the commutations process.

“This is the first time in the history of commutations in Pennsylvania, and possibly the nation, that former offenders will fill these roles,” Fetterman said. “No one is more suitable for these positions than two people who have gone through the process and who have valuable institutional knowledge. We’re grateful to have them on the team.'

Tue Jun 7, 2022, 06:44 PM

Lt. Gov. John Fetterman
AmeriCorps alumnus 1995 to 1997

John Fetterman was attracted to Braddock, PA, by the town's tragic arc of history and malignant beauty. Founded around the site of Andrew Carnegie's first steel mill, Braddock's fortunes declined in lockstep with the American steel industry. As the town's population fell from a peak of more than 20,000 to just 2,300, its buildings, infrastructure, and economy unraveled. With 90 percent of everything lost – population, buildings, homes, and businesses – the challenges seemed insurmountable. John, an AmeriCorps alumnus and Harvard graduate with a Master's Degree in Public Policy, moved to Braddock in 2001.

Four years later John became the town's mayor – winning the election by a single vote – and has been at the forefront of a massive effort to revitalize the once prosperous town ever since. In 2018, after several successful terms as mayor, Fetterman was elected Lieutenant Governor of Pennsylvania. A relentless advocate for reimagining and redesigning Braddock, Lt. Gov. Fetterman's focus on creating a safer, most-just Braddock, youth-oriented programs, attracting artists and other “creatives" to his community and to pursuing green urban renewal and economic development have been recognized in The New York Times, The Atlantic and The Guardian, and on CNBC, CNN, CBS News, “The Colbert Report” and “Real Time with Bill Maher.” In 2012, John was honored as a Champion of Change during AmeriCorps Alums Day at the White House.

Utilizing Lessons from AmeriCorps as Mayor

August 17, 2012 at 2:45 PM ET by John Fetterman , Mayor John Fetterman

John FettermanMayor John Fetterman is being honored as a Champion of Change for his time and effort in AmeriCorps.

As the mayor of Braddock, Pennsylvania, one of the state’s poorest and most challenged communities, my service through AmeriCorps underpins much of my entire professional career and pays dividends daily.

In some respects, I’ve never left AmeriCorps. Just this past Friday, members from Allegheny County’s KEYS Service Corps celebrated their summer of service in our community’s playgrounds. Next week, KEYS Service Corps members will assist with the constructions of an off-leash area for dogs and help staff our Community Day celebration.

Without KEYS Service Corps, our community could not actively engage Braddock’s children during the summer months. But AmeriCorps involvement in our community extends far beyond our playgrounds. AmeriCorps also directs the largest and most successful youth summer jobs program in Allegheny County- The Braddock Youth Project.

Their service to Braddock also annually includes several large-scale service projects.

I’d like to believe I made a difference during my years in AmeriCorps setting up the first computer labs in Pittsburgh’s Hill District and teaching GED classes. Even 15 years after my formal service ended, I will still occasionally encounter a former student that is doing well for themselves and families.

Serving alongside members in Braddock reminds me of my own time with AmeriCorps. The partnership Braddock enjoys with KEYS Service Corps, without a doubt, is one of the most important and potent community rebuilding forces currently operating in Braddock today.

John Fetterman is the mayor of Braddock, Pennsylvania.

But what the hell?

Fetterman is running against Washington when the Democratic Party controls the White House, the House of Reps, and (by virtue of the VP's role) the Senate?

Really terrible messaging in my opinion.

And one would think people in PA are used to his "looks" by now. Is taking about that really the message he should be focusing upon?

Good thing the general election race is in the early stages, as this seems like a rocky start to ad campaign to this Democrat.

Just because a Democrat supported this or that law or policy position in the past doesn’t mean that a past position is an untouchable temple of Democratic goodness.

IMO, he’s not running against the Party or Washington. He is strategically carving out positions that are important to him and his constituency.

NAFTA was not popular in the Midwest and rust belt.

Kamala Harris was against NAFTA saying:

Kamala Harris said in a CNN interview, "I would not have voted for NAFTA, and because I believe that we can do a better job to protect American workers."

And, Joe Biden said this:

Joe Biden said in an interview that he supported the U.S.-Mexico-Canada trade agreement after it passed in the U.S. House in December 2019. Biden said, "What I've seen change is that the vast majority of the labor movement supported it." He said it eliminated some loopholes for drug companies and strengthened the enforcement of labor and environmental standards.

22. None of that started with NAFTA
Tue Jun 7, 2022, 01:34 PM
Jun 2022

it started well before then with the deregulation of corporations that allowed for industry consolidation and chasing the lowest cost labor.

The fucking union-busting ON DAY ONE of Raygun's first term, where he fired thousands of Air Traffic Controllers, is a case in point. It took almost 20 years to staff them back up closer to where they were in the late '70s but the anti-union point was clear, and it lead to what we see today with poor working conditions and slave wages.

Fetterman's messaging is to the very people that Democrats claim to want BACK under their purview. Joe Biden traveled around this state in 2020 (being that he is from here), doing the same thing - going for those blue collar-heavy counties.

All you need to do is look at his speeches in places like Erie, PA, a county that for the first time in decades, voted (R) as a county in 2016. Biden was able to bring that city back to Democrats to help with the votes needed to ensure PA would be in the blue again.

And I suggest you spend a little more time here and get a feeling for how this site operates before going into the attack mode.

Did you know that the recount is still going on? I guess now as you might not be from PA.

Joe Biden did not run against Washington (or by implication the Democratic Party) while he campaigned in PA.

Joe Biden was elected into public office for the first time as a Senator in 1972. Do you have copies of his very first campaign ads?

Here he was in Erie going for the same people that Fetterman is going for -

Fetterman say nothing in these ads about keeping Washington (or PA "blue" ).

It's interesting all these people "guessing" - here was one of his ads from well over year ago when he first announced-

And here are a WHOLE PILE MORE of his videos going back 6 years - https://www.youtube.com/c/JohnfettermanPA/videos

And yet you look at 2 brand new ads and have suddenly concluded some nonsense about his "messaging" despite the fact that when it comes to this particular seat, he has been at this for over a year.

And guess what? This is isn't the first time he has run for Senate. He ran previously in 2016, so none of this campaigning is new to him but it is certainly new to Oz. And I suppose that fact is new info to you too.

One can highlight issues that resonate with blue collar industrial workers w/o taking that tact.

And I'd don't require your suggestions on how to comport myself on a Democratic website.

There is a TOS here and that's all I'll say about that.

germane to criticisms of Fetterman's messaging in these ads when he runs against [Democratically controlled] Washington as opposed running against Republicans, who the ads fail to mention. Right?

I view that as a colossal mistake. Good thing the general election race is early. His team need a re-think IMO.

Supporting the Democratic party is not against the TOS nor is making constructive criticisms of campaigns.

Nice try anyway.

because Teabagger Toomey is a fucking ass.

The missteps by some politicos in this state resulting in Katie McGinty losing that seat in 2016 should not be repeated. In fact, not only did we lose that but sadly Hillary Clinton ALSO lost as well as our losing the State Treasurer and State Auditor General races, the later two previously held by Democrats.

The only one who prevailed in 2016 is the guy who is now running for Governor, our current Attorney General - Josh Shapiro (D) and he ended with MORE votes statewide that year for his AG race that year, than Hillary Clinton (and even outdid Joe Biden in 2020) -

Fetterman has been MY Lt. Governor since 2018 and has worked well with our governor Tom Wolf, who I also voted for twice, and who had problems with the previous Lt. Gov. (Mike Stack), and Fetterman beat Stack in that primary in 2018.

So we have a history here of unique situations and voting patterns and the strategy going forward needs to reflect these realities.

I fervently wish for his success.

I do not find these ads helpful. Why alienate Democratic loyalists by running against Democratically controlled Washington?

There are better ways to position his appeal of standing with the people and their legitimate concerns as far as I'm concerned. Not good framing IMO.

35. Bush 1 created NAFTA...Bill Clinton has said repeatedly that he regrets signing it...and it
Tue Jun 7, 2022, 03:07 PM
Jun 2022

likely contributed to Hillary's losing the rustbelt in the 2016 General...even though she didn't do it... and it didn't help that the TPP was a thing either. NAFTA was a fucking disaster for autos and the rustbelt in general. Many folks here lost everything and literally died because they could get health insurance after their plants closed. My neighbor in Cortland Ohio, hung himself in 2008 after he lost his pension because Delphi (parts manufacturer ) were able to get the pensions thrown out during their 10-year bankruptcy. One of the reasons that Tim Ryan is well respected by both Parties here is that he was the only one who helped the Delphi folks.

I well remember the desperate fundraising going on- cookouts and various fundraising methods. This was before 'go fund me'. Going against NAFTA and the trade agreement is not wrong. It is one of the reasons Trump was able to win the rustbelt albeit by a small margin. He promised to restore manufacturing. Some on our side told voters that the jobs are not coming back but we can pay for retraining. Retraining is a bad word around here. It is the false promises made by Washington when they passed trade agreements that destroyed US manufacturing jobs. And retaining was mostly for Jobs that didn't exist.

If Fetterman chooses to appear that he's running against the Democratic Party, it will not bode well for his success. I'm not saying that is his intention, but these two ads give this Democrat pause.

I (very badly) want to see him win that seat. The messaging in this ads is problematic in my estimation.

North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA)

The United States commenced bilateral trade negotiations with Canada more than 30 years ago, resulting in the U.S.-Canada Free Trade Agreement, which entered into force on January 1, 1989. In 1991, bilateral talks began with Mexico, which Canada joined. The NAFTA followed, entering into force on January 1, 1994. Tariffs were eliminated progressively and all duties and quantitative restrictions, with the exception of those on a limited number of agricultural products traded with Canada, were eliminated by 2008.

NAFTA also includes chapters covering rules of origin, customs procedures, agriculture and sanitary and phytosanitary measures, government procurement, investment, trade in services, protection of intellectual property rights, and dispute settlement procedures. For the full NAFTA text, click here.

(snip)

(the above excerpt had a link for "click here" that is no longer active but the text of the original treaty can be found here - https://www.congress.gov/bill/103rd-congress/house-bill/3450/text)

I.e., the ORIGINAL agreements that would form "NAFTA" were negotiated under George H. W. Bush - The agreement between the U.S. and Canada came first and went into effect. Then a separate set of talks working towards an agreement with Mexico occurred just after, where Canada eventually joined in with those negotiations. None of that initial stuff happened under Clinton. He was still the Governor of Arkansas.

When Poppy lost re-election, THEN Clinton took the ball that Poppy started, rolled with it, and finished it. So regardless of who "signed it", it wasn't originated by him.

And to cap that off, NAFTA no longer exists anyway since 45 torpedoed it in favor of what is now called USMCA that went into effect in 2020.

And no, Fetterman is not "running against the Democratic Party". He IS a vital part of it.

Fetterman's wife says Democratic Senate candidate may be away from campaign trail until July as he recovers from a stroke

By Jeff Zeleny, Chief National Affairs Correspondent

Braddock, Pennsylvania (CNN)Pennsylvania Democratic Senate candidate John Fetterman may be away from the campaign trail until July, his wife told CNN on Monday, as she pushed back on suggestions that the family had not been fully transparent about the extent of his heart condition following a stroke last month.

"I think he deserves a month break to come back as strong as ever," Giselle Fetterman said in an interview with CNN. "This is going to be a tough race and a really important race. I want him to be fully ready for it."

Asked if John Fetterman, who serves as Pennsylvania's lieutenant governor, would return to campaigning by July in one of the nation's marquee Senate contests, she replied: "Maybe. I think so. That's my hope."

I just saw an article earlier this morning that mentioned Al Franken as our last "populist" Democratic candidate, although I would add Corey Booker, who came after. In an environment like this, sometimes it's good to have someone like that to "shake up the place" (within reason).

Fetterman admitted he may have broken the law chasing a black man down the street with a shotgun, ya think? We do not need armed vigilantes chasing people who they assume may have broken the law, remember he heard something he thought was gun shots, but didn't see anything then saw an unarmed black jogger and automatically assumed he was armed and dangerous without any proof. I support him over Oz but that doesn't mean what he did was acceptable.

Ads, too; I watched them earlier today. But the bumper sticker focuses on the simple, irrefutable fact that Oz has been a registered voter in New Jersey for over 30 frigging years. Reportedly, Oz and his wife have been living with the wife's parents (or at least using the address as a residence marker) and just recently purchased a home in the Keystone State.

Does the term Carpetbagger come to mind?

Mr. TV personality doesn't know anything about PA other than what his campaign advisors feed him and is simply using the state as a convenient stepping-stone. No way in hell would NJ elect this faker. The man's never done anything for Pennsylvania's electorate beyond showing his mug on TV and hawking dubious 'cures' to the public. Certainly, he's smarter than The Former Guy since he was once a cardiothoracic surgeon. However, he is of the same cut as all the other hangers-on and opportunists--loyalty to the Orange Slug hoping against hope that some of the orange 'luck' sticks to them.

I find the man absolutely repellent, not even a good actor. Did you see his gun ad? LOL.

Hope Fetterman and his team keep the ad push back in high-gear reminding the electorate who is PA's Favorite Son and who is clearly the Imposter.

No worry there. Don't think you'll see or hear John Fetterman bucking Joe Biden on any of the important issues at hand, be it healthcare (Fetterman has said he'll support any plan to have more people covered and provided access to quality health care), climate change, reproductive rights, gun control, union building, etc. I do think you'll hear Fetterman pushing back against legislators who are less than enthusiastic to support the Build Back Better program. Like a Joe Manchin. In fact, he's said if you're a Joe Manchin Democrat, he's bound to disappoint you.

To me, Fetterman is an unabashed liberal Democrat in the vein of a rough and tumble FDR and he's not afraid or reluctant to say it clearly, loudly, often bluntly. He appeals to people bc he's one of them, someone who says what he means and means what he says, even if he says it awkwardly. He's experienced, educated though he doesn't wear it on his sleeve.

For this state, for this moment, I think he's exactly what we need, an unconventional but passionate Democrat of the old school of politicking.

We desperately need this seat in November. I'm convinced John Fetterman has the best chance of snagging the seat.
