Man hunting for flying discs in gator-filled lake found dismembered

Yikes!

The body of Florida man who ventured into an alligator-infested lake in search of flying discs was missing three limbs when recovered by authorities, according to a report.

Sean Thomas McGuinness, 47, was found dismembered on May 31 at Taylor Lake in Largo, where he frequently waded into water to retrieve wayward flying discs from a nearby disc golf course to resell, cops told Spectrum Bay News 9.

“When Sean McGuinness was recovered last week, he was observed to be missing three limbs,” Largo police spokeswoman Megan Santo told the outlet. ..............(more)

Some of them are resold for pretty good money. My nephew does this, but not in alligator filled ponds. He searches the woods.

They may be a little more specialized and perhaps there's a conflict about using the name Frisbee because it's a trademarked name?

People take disc golf very seriously. There are a lot of courses in public parks across the country. It's fun.

We have a couple courses near me, and my BIL is an enthusiast of the sport.

It is NOT as easy as just tossing a Frisbee at the beach!

Webber also said he frequently saw McGuinness, who was known in the local disc golf community as “Rockstar.” According to several social media posts, McGuinness was suffering from health issues and aware of the dangers associated with his disc-retrieving endeavors, and people often told him not to go in the water, but he didn’t listen.

Near the course entrance, as Jim Looney, Tyler Crump and Kyle Bennington prepared to play, the three friends said they also knew McGuinness, and each expressed compassion for what happened.

“He was a regular here,” Dunedin resident Looney said. “I’ve played here six or seven times and I’ve seen him every time, except today. He always seemed nice. If there was a name or a phone number on the disc, he always tried to return it. I was shocked to hear what happened. It’s sad.”

Crump, who lives in St. Pete, said if there was a phone number on the disc, McGuinness “would text or call you, but if there was no name or number, he would sell it for five or ten bucks.”

Bradley confirmed McGuinness was diligent about attempting return lost discs to their rightful owners. “He’d try to contact the person several times to return it, which was rare,” he said.

Good lord. I read elsewhere that they were killing gators in this pond. Why? They’re providing a public service.

One day when I was at the lake, just hanging out, I watched a boat pulling a water skier around. The skier would go down and it was always exciting to see what would reach him first, the boat or the many gators would begin to converge on him. Finally I couldn't take the stress any more and had to leave since I didn't want to see the skier eaten.
