They're saying 72 have died as a result of Sandy. Has anyone considered the number of homeless in NYC who lived underground, in subway tunnels and all the nooks and crannies of the massive city? Most of these people likely wouldn't even have known Sandy was coming.

Seeing the flooded subways, parking garages and other structures had me wondering why no one has thought to start looking for these people.

I think some of the more thoughtful authors have commented
on this problem. Everyone mentioned publicly is either "middle class"
or rich. All the social programs and policies considered by politicians
and legislators are for the "middle class."
The poor, homeless, disabled, and elderly vulnerable and distressed
are virtually invisibilized or marginalized. Ours is a very sad, sick
society.

(32,095 posts)I would like to think that Mr. Bloomberg, Archbishop Dolan, the Salvation Army, etc., have thought about it, as well. I am sure many were missed in any efforts they may have had, however. Very sad.

(5,762 posts)I heard it on Monday's news before we lost power. But, the spokesperson (do not remember the name or agency) said it was difficult work with a low rate of success. If people don't want to be found, they won't be.
But the city was not unaware of its subway and other out-of-sight dwellers. Again, I don't know how big the effort was, but someone tried.
