anyone notice how the January 6th hearings have been buried in the news since Friday's SCOTUS news?I haven't seen anything about it today, EVEN ON DU.
This was a hugely successful gop campaignand once again using abortion. They've been using the abortion tool for decades. And now with a very important mid-term coming up, they use the ultimate tool: removing Roe v. Wade.
And also note: there are a lot of anti-President Biden posts /comments surfacing on DU, as well.
Don't let the gop gain control while our country is being ripped of rights, and we are heading into a major election.

(27,814 posts)... that the Roe decision was going to dominate the news. Don't forget that not everyone is following the J-6 hearings - and having Roe overturned affects a LOT more people of all political stripes.
As for the GOP using the 'ultimate tool', they've gained nothing politically - in fact, they've probably lost a lot of voters. Those who wanted Roe overturned undoubtedly vote Republican already - and I don't see any Democrats switching to the GOP as a result of overturning it.
The vast majority of voters wanted Roe kept in place - so a net loss for Republicans. We'll have to wait until November to see just how big the loss is - but I have a feeling it's going to be substantial.
This was an extremely unpopular decision - and the only voters happy with it are a small minority of the populace who, as I said, were already Republican voters anyway.

(139 posts)Every day we must be protesting in the streets, online and by registering million of new voters and activating already registered ones. The Crusades have begun. We should be confronting every single Republican running for office now. Calling them on their support of forcing a 12 year old girl to bear her father's child. This is a Republican disease that must be fought now.
NanceGreggs
(27,814 posts)... we will have to wait until November to see how many voters the GOP has lost as a result of their position on Roe.
That is a completely different issue than the measures you're citing.
I believe that for a lot of Republican voters - especially women - overturning Roe will prove to be a game- changing step too far.

(9,118 posts)The comfortable voters who had convinced themselves that their party only waved the abortion card to make the wing-nutz happy. Many of them will sit out this next election.
However, Im not sure that their are enough of this group to make a big enough difference this November. Some of these will STILL vote GQP. WHY? Because despite the fact that their ballots are secret, theyre afraid of what the Joneses will think.
NanceGreggs
(27,814 posts)... so of course "what the Joneses will think" is not an issue.
I knew several Republicans who voted for Obama - while insisting to friends and family that of course they'd voted for McCain.

(9,118 posts)Yes, ballots are SECRETas they OUGHT to be in any free, self-governing democratic republic. But too many of this comfortable group lack the intestinal fortitude to vote their conscience or health because theyll STILL worry about what their neighbors or boss or preachers or whatever will think. Let alone Mrs. Grundyor Mrs. Grundys great-granddaughter.
I wish it wasnt true and that theyd be silently bloody-minded enough to stand up to the anti-abortion fanatics, but I feel Ive been disappointed by this sort time and time again.
NanceGreggs
(27,814 posts)No one is worried about what the neighbours - or anyone else will think - when they can simply lie about how they voted, knowing they'll never be 'outed'.
I'm sure people lie about their votes all the time, depending on who's asking and what they want to hear.

(27,814 posts)... just how big a deal this is to pro-choice Republican women - and there are a lot of them.
My sister is a life-long Republican. When she voted for Trump, I asked if she wasn't concerned about the abortion issue, given she has two daughters and a granddaughter.
I reminded her that she'd had three abortions herself before she was 23.
She said, "If they overturned Roe, I'd leave the party. But that's never going to happen."
We haven't spoken since she voted for Trump - but I doubt she'll be voting GOP in November.

(31,024 posts)Watch the Republicans. They are masters at it. They just have corrupted goals. But they determine what they are and stick to it for decades. They dont care how little they chip away at our rights, how little at a time, they know theyre going to win eventually. When we cant put our ideals into successful action we become impatient and start blaming each other

(153,160 posts)and we always knew the official decision release was in June
do you understand that women now do not control their own bodies, that the GOP would force a woman to carry a rapist's baby? THAT IS A BIG FUCKING DEAL.
NanceGreggs
(27,814 posts)Even some of the staunchest anti-choicers want exceptions for rape, incest, health of the mother, babies with zero chance of having quality of life, etc.
The GOP has - as is their want - overstepped.
How many parents are thinking, "If my twelve-year-old daughter is raped by her uncle and is forced to give birth, I'm okay with that"?
The idea that all Republicans are willing to go along with that "to own the libs" is beyond ludicrous.
As is always said, Republicans don't react to something until it touches them personally - well, this DOES touch them personally, an on a gut level.
Show me the Republican parent who's okay with their daughter having to carry her rapist's child - show me the Republican family that's okay with being told that mom has to die because she can't terminate the ectopic pregnancy that will kill her.
Yeah, I'm sure "owning the libs" is uppermost in most Republicans' minds. If little Janey has to give birth at twelve-years-old, or if mom has to die - it's all good, because we get the last laugh at those pissed-off libs.
Jesus Hussein Christ, I sometimes wonder what people "on our side" are thinking when they come up with these ridiculous notions.
Skittles
(153,160 posts)I always use the rape example because it usually stops repukes from their ever-present urge to blame the woman. I doubt there is a repuke who thinks Brett fucking Kavanaugh should have more of a say in such a pregnancy than a child or her parents.

There are some of us LBNers who go combing for news including J6 "witness" status/updates and try to get it posted (although most DUers hang out in GD and/or the Lounge instead ).
As for the abortion issue - THAT is a motivator for Democrats and is critical for coverage because not only does it underscore the GOP's decades-long war on women, it portends the loss of other rights including those only recently obtained by the LGBTQ community, so that is huge.
The media has actually wanted to pound the "inflation! inflation! inflation!" mantra and hang that noose on Biden and Democrats, which has always been a "traditional" topic for the "throw the bums out" strategy. However as we know, this economic situation is manufactured and temporary compared to the loss of reproductive health, which right now is permanent unless Roe can be codified and we start clawing back power in the states. So that needs to be at the forefront, coupled with the corruption of the GOP and their involvement in the J6 insurrection and coup attempt.
What is troubling though, is the gun issue, even with the bill just signed yesterday, but since Turtle supported it, we do know it was actually the one topic that the GOP used to take that issue off the table for going after them for.
So if one wants to look at different things to push, because the general public, and even DU, is completely clueless about Civics 101, the ramifications of the J6 insurrection won't cause the same level of an immediate visceral reaction as removing healthcare rights for women, with the fear that this type of stripping away rights, won't stop there.
