Joan of Arc was put to death for making rape more difficult.

History says witchcraft, but Joan was put to death for the capital crime of wearing men’s clothing. Trousers made it more difficult for an enemy soldier to exercise his ‘right’ to rape. Skirts made that easier. Joan of Arc was executed for defending herself against the possibility of being raped.

That jaw-dropping level of ghoulish misogyny is alive and well in the U.S. Supreme Court.

doesn't seem to slow down any rapists.

I really don't think your statement about wearing trousers making it harder for the enemy soldiers to rape is actually valid. Plus, she was the only women out there wearing trousers, I'm pretty sure.

Side-saddles weren't a thing yet, and she had to ride along with her troops.
Also it would be hard to go to battles in long skirts, don't you think?

If Saint Joan managed to discourage rapists, probably her sword and shield did more than the pants.

for one reason and one reason only, and this was it. Of course it had immense practical value for a number of reasons a military leader would consider important.

They needed to dream up a reason to put her to death. It didn’t have to make sense. It just had to work.

I suspect this could be part of the argument since she was not acting like the prescribed female of the time.
