History says witchcraft, but Joan was put to death for the capital crime of wearing mens clothing. Trousers made it more difficult for an enemy soldier to exercise his right to rape. Skirts made that easier. Joan of Arc was executed for defending herself against the possibility of being raped.
That jaw-dropping level of ghoulish misogyny is alive and well in the U.S. Supreme Court.

I really don't think your statement about wearing trousers making it harder for the enemy soldiers to rape is actually valid. Plus, she was the only women out there wearing trousers, I'm pretty sure.

Also it would be hard to go to battles in long skirts, don't you think?
If Saint Joan managed to discourage rapists, probably her sword and shield did more than the pants.

They needed to dream up a reason to put her to death. It didnt have to make sense. It just had to work.
