Census: US sees .... decline in the white population for first time in history

The United States experienced unprecedented multiracial population growth and a decline in the white population for the first time in the nation’s history, according to U.S. Census officials, who released data Thursday revealing the most sweeping picture of America’s racial and ethnic makeup in a decade.

“These changes reveal that the US population is much more multiracial, and more racially and ethnically diverse, than what we measured in the past,” said Nicholas Jones, the director of race, ethnicity, research and outreach for the Census Bureau's population division.

The white, non-Hispanic population, without another race, decreased by 8.6% since 2010, according to the new data from the 2020 census. The U.S. is now 57.8% white, 18.7% Hispanic, 12.4% Black and 6% Asian.

Some of those changes, Jones said, can be attributed to improvements to the survey. The white, non-Hispanic population is still the largest racial group in the U.S.

Nevertheless, the release bolstered expert predictions that the United States is becoming a more diverse nation, with continued expansion of the Hispanic, Black and Asian American populations and growing numbers of multiracial residents – only a fraction in past surveys.

prior to Trump entering that stage, this was their great fear. I listened to RW talk radio during drive time. immigration from south of the border (with the resulting changes to America) was THE big topic. There was almost nothing else.

I am over 80. There has been quite a shift in marriage attitudes in my lifetime. Well, not even marriage, relationships generally. My humble opinion is this country will be SO much better off as the multiracial group gains numbers. EVERYTHING is stronger with diversity.

If the overall population goes up, the percentage of a group making up that population can go down with respect to the whole while their actual numbers increase.

Something also often overlooked: we're in a "splitting" period. When I was growing up, "lumping" was the norm: we were taught in grammar school that there were 3 races and that all of humanity was shoe-horned into one of those categories (there was some handwaving about Polynesians and indigenous Australians being some sort of mix). Now more people are proudly claiming a wider variety of heritages, often mixed ones, and as a result the percentage of people in one particular group, in this case, White, may go down. (Factoid, courtesy Wikipedia: in the 1948 court case that nullified California's anti-miscegenation act, the plaintiff was of Mexican ancestry but state law at the time classified her as White: today she might choose to identify otherwise)
