...The idiots will change their outlook on almost everything. I remember 1972. We lost all the states but one.
I worked for McGovern. We didn't lose by a little, we lost by a whole lot. 50 years ago. So, what happened next?
...We elected a moderate Jimmy Carter, who by the way, instituted laws that saved lives. Seat belts & air bags eventually,
in front, that saved thousands of lives. Jimmy Carter was great. Most people don't know that he ordered the
seat belts all over, & air bags in front. But he did it in an odd way. The orders were for 1984, way in the future,
to give time for the auto makers to change their production process. Now, the seat belts are in front & back, with
millions of more cars, and far fewer deaths than in 1979 or 1980...In..79 & 80, there were approximately 55,000
deaths on the highway, now it is closer to 35 or 36,000 deaths on the highway with the safety devises.
.......Again, the idiots will change their total perspective on reproductive rights.. after they loose big in November.
...And they will lose very big in November. Come the next presidential election, (2024) I believe a moderate, like
Kinsinger will lead the party. Someone who makes lots of sense and appeals to everyone. Trump will be lost
in hell with his small minority of followers....
The republican leadership knows that Trump is a loser & a killer and cannot get elected ever...
...Leadership knows the truth, but Donald Trump is delusional!!

(4,845 posts)The republicans now are a cult and I believe they will need multiple years of big losses for them to see the light. If they are even remotely reasonable, they would have abandoned TFG when he lost when all the advantages were to him getting re-elected. A reasonable party would have rethink their strategy. But no, this cult of republicans aren't going to "see the light" with just one loss.

see a change that will keep the party alive. It is that simple

..... I remember that & so do millions of others, & more when we play that video over, and over, and over, and over
again....if he is nominated. And professionals in the Puke Party, know that he is total death. as do you & I.
..... Again he will NOT GET THE NOMINATION..if he desires it

(9,481 posts)The only way TFG loses the Republican nomination is if someone like DeathSatan says he will make Liberals cry even harder and convinces them he has a better chance to win.

(4,845 posts)As much as I think you are right. I don't think I want to test how stupid some Americans can get ever again. At least in my circle, those who voted for TFG are still with him and won't hesitate one bit to vote for him again.
Though, we know that TFG can unite the different fractions of democrats, independent and ex-republicans against him.
But after the trauma in 2016, I really would just prefer not to ever go through it again. So, I'd rather him not run in 2024.

(8,964 posts)It will continue to be marginalized, and institutionalists and establishment types in the GOP will attempt to move the party back to a center-right platform. The schism will persist, however. Trump may well be toast, but his pre-annointed successor DeSantis or someone else will emerge and attempt to fill the void with a "saner" approach to neo-fascism. Much as we made the mistake of writing off Trump as an unelectable crackpot, DeSantis and others of similar ideology should be considered as formidable opponents. They will continue to push and distort culture war issues, and will exploit economic issues to the Nth degree. And as always, lie repeatedly whenever it suits their purpose.

(38,427 posts)In the end, after November, moderates will win & take control. You don't think so? Well it will happen, and that
is my opinion and I am sticking to it. Eisenhower was a moderate after many years of democratic control.
...The so called "moderates" will gain complete control after November. That is what will happen. Don't underestimate
them. The "moderates" are lifelong professional politicians who know the game. They have played the game a long
time. It really is that simple. Never underestimate your opponents.. Never means NEVER...
..OH My? Did we underestimate the power of Trump & company?..in a previous election?

(15,411 posts)An African American man convinced me that finances triumph all. Was waiting on line in a restaurant and politics/economy was on the TV. We started talking, and he said "I voted for Biden because Trump was a racist and horrible person, but gas and the economy were great with him, and Russia never would have attacked Ukraine because they knew Trump would have bombed Moscow. If he runs again, I'll vote for him."
This convinced me that personal finances conquer all. He's willing to vote for someone that he thinks is a racist because he likes the way he handles other things better.

(1,850 posts)Although "seeing the light" is an expression I dislike with regard to the GOPQ because many already believe they've seen the light, they know the way, and they hallucinate, lie and conform to peer pressure. And to me it implies they will truly change, which I sincerely doubt.
But they will change their tune. I believe you are correct.
I appreciate and agree with your conviction that they will lose big. I've been especially following the governor's races, 36 states in November. With the reversal of Roe, state leadership is even more important, and I'm hopeful for some surprising results in those races. (From our close defeats in some red states to narrow victories, to landslide wins in blue states.) But there are extreme enclaves who will elect "tfg" candidates in local and some state elections.
I'm not sure the party will be able to repair itself. I think it needs to re-form. I think about all the political parties we've had over the years, and how they've shifted and renamed. They are not the party of Lincoln. My feelings since 2016 have been mostly that it will shatter, implode, and split. The GOP is no more. We call it the GOPQ or GQP. The leadership is a mess too, full of infighting and foreign influence.
Who are their leaders, or would be leaders? The PACs, lobbyists, think tanks, and media outlets exert influence and some control over the members and leadership. Is there enough sanity left in that crazy pool to expect reasonable leadership moving forward. 45? Moscow Mitch? DeSatan? ABot? Cheney? Kinzinger? Flake? After they lose big and want to rebrand, they won't agree on who's in charge. I agree a moderate will be their best chance.
They've behaved like rabid animals attacking each other as they do outsiders. There will always be radical, violent and christofascist factions within the party, so I question how reasonable they can become or appear to be.
