Republican Norm Shinkle resigns from key Michigan election board

Lansing — Republican Norm Shinkle, a longtime member of the board that's in charge of certifying Michigan's elections, has resigned from his position less than five months before Election Day.

Shinkle confirmed his resignation from the Board of State Canvassers in an interview with The Detroit News Monday. He had served as one of the two Republicans on the four-member panel for about 13 years.

Shinkle said he submitted a letter to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's office last week, informing her of his decision to step down.

The vacancy means the Michigan Republican Party will have to develop a list of three potential replacements amid intensifying scrutiny of the certification process and as many within the GOP advance unproven claims that widespread fraud cost Donald Trump the 2020 presidential race against Democrat Joe Biden.
