This time, who is it that will fight the Sadducees?

And so I wonder - Biblically, who is TFG? Biblically who is McConnell? Biblically who is the Supreme Court?

The following extract seems to address that question - Thoughts from those of you who are more of a biblical scholar than I?

-------------

Clearly the christo-fascist movement is gaining traction. The gentile image of a peaceful church meeting on Sundays to worship a teacher who preached love, support for the poor and acceptance is in decline. In its place an increasingly angry christo-fascist movement has co-opted Christianity to promote divisions and lies. Their Jesus is a new and different character. Their Jesus justifies white privilege, misogyny and divisiveness. Their Jesus sees love as weakness. Their Jesus says greed isn’t just 'good' - greed is GREAT, greed is godly'. In a marketing coup for the ages, slick preachers, shadowy strategists and jingoistic politicians have co-opted the Jesus of love and replaced him with a figure to suit their own needs.

Debating with those deep in the hole of this new form of Christianity is a losing strategy. As many have experienced, there is an impenetrable wall. The only people they will listen to is the preacher on the stage (the one in the expensive suit who is asking for money) and TFG (who - no surprise - is also asking for money). You can try logic (doesn’t work). You can try using intellect (doesn’t work) and you can try anger (doesn’t work). So what does work? How can sense penetrate the cocoon within which these adherents live?

One option that can start to crack the shell is to leverage the bible itself by recasting events of today into a biblical prism to which ardent followers can better relate. To do that we need to look for parallels between the events of today and the stories in the New Testament. As it happens there is a very strong parallel. A parallel that brings the GOP into sharp focus and helps illuminate the chasm that separates the GOP from the true message of Jesus.

The key lies in drawing the parallels between today’s cast of characters and those of whom we learn in the bible. Biblically, who is TFG? Biblically who is McConnell? Biblically who is the Supreme Court? To me the answer is that this cabal who have co-opted the name of Jesus are the very people whose actions lead to the killing of Jesus - They are the Sadducees. The powerful sect of Jewish leaders who aligned to the rich and powerful interests of their time. The leaders who acted as the local enablers of foreign power and who subjugated their own people to maintain their control. Seizing control of the Temple and the courts (the Sanhedrin) they wielded immense power over the people and decided who lived and who died. Using religion as their weapon they declared they were the only path to God’s salvation.

At their helm sat the high-priests Caiaphas (Trump) and Ananus (McConnell). Men who used religion as a business and the Roman army as their protectors and backstop. Legitimized by the Sanhedrin (the Supreme Court) and supported by their clans, the Sadducees (the GOP) were the corrupt political force in New Testament times.

As today’s hypocritical GOP has killed the loving Jesus, the Sadducees conspired to kill the actual Jesus. As the GOP embraces foreign money, the Sadducees partnered with the Romans. Just as today’s GOP conspires to perpetuate its own greed the Sadducees clung to their own greed by defying God’s son.

Jesus challenged the Sadducees and rose above them. Now it is our turn to fight the Sadducees. To do that we need to label them and we need to name them. We need to label TFG as Caiaphas, we need to label the Supreme Court the Sanhedrin. We need to call McConnell Ananus and we need to shine light upon the hypocrisy just as Jesus did.

I guess my thinking is that the bible is their language, so time to fight fire with fire. Little else seems to be working
