I think that's the lesson here.
Since the Constitution explicitly protects religion, then Liberals--of all faiths--must band together and form a new secular humanist religion based on the ideals of the Democratic party. And seriously commit to it.
Having just watched and read "Under the Banner of Heaven" about Mormonism (now is a great time to do that, if you really want an inside view of what is happening around us), I'm convinced that this is the only viable path left for Liberals in America.
Those who think that a religion must be really, really old, need to remember that Mormonisn--a religion practiced by millions throughout the world, and that dominates a whole U.S. state--is *younger* than this country! And was founded by a known grifter who probably had mental health issues.
Those of us who resist organized religions may have to just accept that, in this country, at this time, it's the only way.

So far, they are using "privacy" as a surrogate, but pretty soon they will have to confront this head-on.

(31,027 posts)I believe things get infinitely larger and infinitely smaller. I mean theres no beginning and no end. To think there could be some being in control of all this is insane as far as Im concerned.

(4,338 posts)The Flying Spaghetti Monster (FSM) is the deity of the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, or Pastafarianism, a social movement that promotes a light-hearted view of religion.[3] It originated in opposition to the teaching of intelligent design in public schools. According to adherents, Pastafarianism (a portmanteau of pasta and Rastafarianism) is a "real, legitimate religion, as much as any other".[4] It has received some limited recognition as such.[5][6][7][8][9]

(7,302 posts)This is a pragmatic solution, based solely on the specificity and centrality of Religious Freedom in our Constitution.
It is uniquely the *only* thing that gets unqualified protection!

(8,893 posts)is the leading beacon of light in the battle for abortion access. With Roe v Wade overturned, a religious exemption will be the only available challenge to many restrictions to access.
TST stands alone because we are the only entity that can assert a religious liberty claim that terminating a pregnancy is a central part of a religious ritual that encourages self-empowerment and affirms bodily autonomy.
This means that the imposition of waiting periods and mandatory counseling is akin to demanding a waiting period and counseling before one can be baptized or receive communion. Clearly, that would be a violation of religious liberty.
While the SCOTUS decision is clearly a major set back, the Supreme Court has repeatedly affirmed religious rights. The Satanic Temple is currently suing the state of Texas to protect our civil rights. Our Texas claims are untethered to the due process Clause. They are a direct interpretation of the right of conscience in the Free Exercise Clause. We have requested alternative science-based abortion counseling in Minnesota. We will also be suing the FDA for unrestricted religious access to Mifepristone and Misoprostol.
These efforts to maintain abortion access are legally sound, but they take time to get through the courts, and regrettably, not all judges abide by the law.
of course there is always the Church of Euthanasia "Did sperm wind up somewhere it shouldn't? Call 1-800-584-9911 right now for emergency contraception. Hurry! You've got 72 hours!"

(7,302 posts)That'd be an interesting read.
Maybe the current SCOTUS needs to be flooded with cases involving non-xtian religions, just to test how free other religions actually are.

(34,136 posts)There are those that see agnosticism as only a way-station, an intermediate step for those still trying to decide whether to believe in God (or a god or gods) or to absolutely believe in no gods exist at all. Agnosticism is seen as a refuge for those who cannot make up their minds.
What this site seeks to illustrate is that agnosticism in itself is a legitimate end position with respect to religious belief. We do not know because we cannot know. The ultimate truth about the existence of a Supreme Being is unknowable. Recognizing this, we can free ourselves from a fruitless search and indeed, no longer care about answering the question. This does not mean we don't care about agnosticism.
Our Articles of Faith
The existence of a Supreme Being is unknown and unknowable.
If there is a Supreme Being, then that being appears to act as if entirely apathetic to events in our universe.
We are apathetic to the existence or non-existence of a Supreme Being.
A poster of our articles of faith is available as a pdf file.
Nomenclature
Our full designation is The Universal Church Triumphant of the Apathetic Agnostic, abbreviated UCTAA. In the interest of brevity, we are also known as the Church of the Apathetic Agnostic or alternatively the Apathetic Agnostic Church. All three terms and the abbreviation refer to our church.

They have various papers and discussions about what and why they believe/do not believe but I have been too apathetic to read them. At one point I considered getting ordained in their church but never got around to it - too bad since they are no longer offering ordination - https://www.apatheticagnostic.com/join/ordain.html
All in all, they are the perfect fit for my attitude towards religion - but at the moment they are open to a take over: https://www.apatheticagnostic.com/index.html
