By Natalie Korach Jun 27th, 2022, 5:08 pm
In a new statement by Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), the Speaker of the House outlined her legislative response to the Supreme Court decision on Dobbs v. Jackson Womens Health Organization, going as far to suggest eliminating the filibuster.
Pelosi released this statement on Monday, three days after the Supreme Court announced the 5-4 ruling, overturning the landmark Roe v. Wade case that had been standing as precedent for nearly fifty years.
The Speaker of the House wrote that the decision displayed the Supreme Courts disrespect for a womans freedom over her reproductive health.
Pelosi highlighted that House Democrats have been anticipating this ruling preparing for the possibility of this tragic outcome, she said continuing Our Caucus has been exploring avenues to protect the health and freedom of American women.

(9,481 posts)To beat the shit out of Republicans in November over this, rather than inventing some end-around that will never work and may end up coming back to bite us in the future.

(5,104 posts)Let's work on winning seats. We have a new opportunity to do that now.
God-forbid the Republicans ever take over Congress the w/o a Senate a filibuster in place.
That could be very (very) bad.

(17,914 posts)or those worried about end arounds. A sizable chuck of Americans, the majority in my mind, don't want fucking excuses.
I once had a boss's, boss who would listen to our excuses and then say "I get it, but I don't care. Find a fucking way to win." Hated his ass much of the time, but he did get a lot of shit done and earned my grudging respect.

(26,291 posts)complete overhaul.
For example for the lower Federal courts I think that once a justice is appointed they have a single 13 year term after which they are ineligible to ever be appointed as a Federal judge.
SCOTUS itself is also changed but not by increasing the number of justices.
The change I imagine for that the we take the 9 judges but term limit them to 9 years with a new randomly picked judge replacing the old ones by stages.
First year we see 3 judges removed and replaced by 3 new ones and second year we see 3 of the remaining 6 original ones replaced the same way and then lastly we see the last 3 replaced after which we start at the beginning again.
That way it makes it very difficult for any political party to repeat a rigged SCOTUS court such as we have currently since the SCOTUS judges are randomly picked without the President nominating and the Senate being involved in confirming them.

I think it helps in some small way to get ahead of the economic issues. "You think things are bad now? They can get worse."
Whether or not the economy improves to a sufficient degree is largely out of our control at this point. However, with things like this, every little bit helps.

(9,145 posts)Although, Sinema has never explicitly said she would defend the filibuster over a bill that legalizes a federal right to abortion.
I say, make her make that choice. She might be down for the cause.
