After the age of 35 pregnancy comes with high risks. The eggs that we carry have been with us since we were in OUR mothers wombs.
The chance of birth defects is exponential. The risks to the health of the mother are also greatly heightened.
Some women spend tens of thousands of dollars to conceive a child after 35. That is their choice. If they can afford the expenditure I assume they can also have good medical insurance. They have access to the best doctors their $ will buy.
Other women, not in the top 3%, are gonna have problems.
NO SANE COUNTRY would want a woman past 50 years old to give birth (if she and/or the child survives it) because the odds of that child being 'normal' are not great. There would likely be 'needs'.
This country does not appreciate or support 'needs'.
Women in their 50's likely think that a missed period is menopause kicking in. I did. After 3 missed periods u see your Gyn to deal with menopause. You get a different diagnosis.
I made a choice. I believe it was in the best interest of myself and the 'life' of the child.
I would not want to be at my child's HS graduation ceremony at 70 years old
I have NO SHAME.

And you're absolutely right. This country does NOT appreciate or support 'needs'.

(90,674 posts)As with the very young, the girls 14 and way under, its a high risk pregnancy in every sense. I am glad you were able to get the care you needed.

(3,292 posts)This is another circumstance -- like all of them-- where only the woman can decide what the best choice is.
At 25, I had a dangerous delivery that messed up my body in several ways (2 permanently). And I was young and healthy and had no pre-existing condition.
I don't think there are too many women in their 50s who would come out of a pregnancy and delivery without some damage-- blood pressure, kidney problems, blood clots come to mind.

(10,749 posts)and as Hillary said last week, women will die.
I'll add to that: Girls will die. Babies will die. Suicides will rise. We may see these developments right away, or they may take several years of mayhem before these assertions can be verified.
The only way to stop the Supreme Court from legislating from the bench is to expand the Court. Notwithstanding the 60% + of Americans who are opposed to the blow dealt to Roe, and notwithstanding the 60%+ of Americans who believe Trump should be indicted, I have little doubt that RW voters will vote D. So, unless some share of "mainstream" republican vote D, voting will not change a thing.
Remember, Republicans have had this in mind for 50 years. Thomas has said he is out for revenge, and has been since he became a supreme court justice. Fox has been at this for more than 2 decades, hate radio for far longer. We have less than 2 more years to implement some sort of pushback. And while Liz Cheney is to be commended for her role on the J6 committee - as they say, books will be written - let's not forget that she and other never trump Republicans believe trump was doing a fine job until he "went off the rails."

(15,241 posts)Now, perhaps if she set up a small charity (non-religious) of say $100,000,000,000 (100 billion USD) to help take care of babies through infancy, childhood, school, college, and a good chance at a job - perhaps I'd have some respect for her and her ilk.
Not expecting to get any help from her FedSoc, CNP, Opus Dei, libertarian folks.

(1,850 posts)So she can hire more nannies. But I agree, wouldn't consider her an acceptable adoptive parent, even though she has adopted a few. I don't consider her an acceptable human being either.
I've seen the term Stepford wife used to describe her more than once.

(15,084 posts)She can take off work for three days, put her other children - somewhere, drive or fly to another state for the procedure.
Easy peasy.
Women with money can always get abortion care. Poor women cannot.
Your point is a good one.
