Report: DOJ Brings In More Firepower—and Takes Aim at Trumpworld

The bombshell revelations of the House’s Jan. 6 hearings have the Department of Justice putting more manpower—and more real estate—toward its investigations of figures close to ex-President Donald Trump, according to The Wall Street Journal. The paper revealed the law enforcement agency has expanded the roster, office space, and mission of the band of attorneys digging into Republicans potentially complicit in the bloody attack on the Capitol last year. The news comes after the latest rounds of congressional hearings disclosed that a host of GOP congressmen sought pardons in connections with their activism to overturn President Joe Biden’s 2020 victory, and after feds raided the home of ex-DOJ lawyer Jeffrey Clark, who the House committee found had assisted Trump in pressuring the agency to falsely claim fraud in the Georgia election results. But the Journal also reported DOJ had grown frustrated with the committee for failing to turn over transcripts of its interviews, particularly with Republicans who participated in false pro-Trump elector slates in states Biden won.

the 2020 through December 2020 and after the Jan. 2021 insurrection and fake elector creators and participants...INCLUDING TRUMP HIMSELF.

DO NOT LEAVE OUT TRUMP, THE MAIN CULPRIT, as always seems to happen (see the post-Mouller report non-moves, as well as the Manhattan DA's squashing of the investigation against trump even though investigators were ready to indict him on felony charges).

If DOJ lets it slide, like the crimes of the AWOL Bush regime were ignored, the USA will not survive because the people will have no confidence in the rule of law.

before the committee began the hearings.

You just don't hire that many new people if you don't have big plans for a huge investigation.

The fact that there are more new hires, more space and expansion of focus is significant.

What happened? Too much noise in the next room?

Kids having a stomp dance upstairs?

Neighbor across the way with his stereo turned up too loud?

Somebody turn the thermostat way down and then yank the covers off his bed?

Maybe he's been shamed into stepping on the gas in this case? NOW he staffs up?

It'll take awhile to win me over, Merrick. You have to start by WAKING THE FUCK UP!!!

Great news! A lot of indictments and court processes have to be ongoing by October so they won't get totally overturned if, by some fluke, Republicans gain a House majority status and try to shut down all things January 6. I could be seeing this wrong, but I think they're trying to get more nimble.

Once the department comes into possession of this material, they will likely be obligated to produce at least portions of it to some of the 800-plus defendants who have been charged to date by prosecutors based on their involvement in the siege of the Capitol. Even with so-called “protective orders” in place that nominally prevent defendants from widely disseminating discovery from the government, there is no realistic way to ensure that defendants or their lawyers will not share this material with people who are not supposed to have access to it. That, in turn, might allow people to coordinate their stories, and it could disincentivize other people from coming forward to speak to the committee.

As for the Justice Department’s position, it is understandable that they would want this material, but the suggestion that they are entitled to it is dubious at best. In order to satisfy their discovery obligations to criminal defendants, prosecutors are required to produce (among other things) any exculpatory evidence in their possession, but this is not evidence in the department’s possession
.

The DoJ should have been able to discover all, most, or even more than the House has found, on their own, without having to be embarrassed into working harder.
