she was actually 9 YEARS OLD when she was impregnated:
Its a horrifying story. The girl was reportedly only 9 at the time she became pregnant, half the legal age of consent (this was rape under all possible fact patterns) and a time in her life when she should be worried about losing her baby teeth, not having a baby of her own.

Reserve some of that fornicating for the Catholic Church, a domestic enemy of the constitution which still enjoys its tax exempt status. Thank You Blue Owl for your passion.
Both institutions are profoundly evil grifting-pedophile rings.

Catholics and Evangelicals are turning a democracy into a theocracy. If left unchecked, I would expect to see the Catholic Church reviving the Inquisition and the fundie Evangelicals submitting spectral evidence to the SC.
That is only partly hyperbole.

(21,585 posts)the "Big Three."
Neither Judaism nor Islam are trying to turn our republic into a theocracy. Abortion is permissible in most sects of both Judaism and Islam. And Christianity, too, for that matter.
It is the Evangelical and Catholic churches that are pushing their beliefs on everyone else.
Sky Jewels
(7,133 posts)But the very framing of the three monotheisms is incredibly harmful the world over. There's one angry male god who is the creator and ruler of the entire universe (apparently "he" focuses on this one little planet amongst trillions, but that's another discussion). All the other characters in the mythologies that have any consequence are male (Jesus, Mohummud, Abraham, Moses). In Christianity, the two main females are Eve (who gets blamed for the downfall of humanity) and Mary (who gets raped by the angry sky god). The damage to women's psyches and lives over centuries from these ridiculous stories is beyond calculation. The power imbalance of the planet in terms of men controlling women is in large part due to these evil tall tales being accepted as "true."

(21,585 posts)God in OT stories, alongside stories of a merciful and forgiving God in the Old Testament. Societies grow and change over time, and so do their customs and beliefs.
In a non religious context, look how democracy changed in the US over time, from a nation that had slaves and denied women and certain ethnic/racial groups the right to vote. There were people at the time of the nation's birth who advocated for the end of slavery and for universal voting rights, but slavery did not end until the 1860s. Women did not get the right to vote until 1920. Native Americans did not become citizens in their own land until 1922, with the right to vote. And former slaves were denied their rights even after they were legally established. There are STILL people who are trying to suppress voting rights for minorities and women, and a court that is taking rights away from people. But we - especially Dems - do not toss out democracy because of that. We continue to support it against the Luddites who try to turn back the clock.
Religions change over time, too, as societies change. But even in the past, Jewish literature included Sarah as the mother of nations, along with Abraham. There is an OT book named for a woman (Esther) whose courage and cleverness saves her people from annihilation under Babylonian rule. There was also Deborah, a "judge" of Israel. And the story whose characters are female in the loyalty between Ruth and Naomi.
I am not minimizing the tales of cruelty and misogyny in the Bible, or how they have been used in the past against women. I am saying that religions change and grow over time as society does.
The Eve story has been used against women for millennia. Anthropology provides some context for the origin of the story. The ancient Hebrews were a nomadic herding people before they became the nation of Israel in Canaan. The neighboring societies were settled agricultural people who practiced fertility religions that included sexual ceremonies with temple priestesses. In some cases, ritual sacrifice of a priest (or king) was part of the ceremonies. The snake was a symbol of fertility among those people. In that context, the story of Adam and Eve was a condemnation of those rituals. That does not excuse how women were villified over it. It is just how it originated.
In the NT Gospels, Jesus criticizes the sexual double standard when he comes across men ready to stone a woman for adultery. In another NT story, he draws attention to a sick woman at a synagogue. The custom of the time was for women to be at the outer fringes of the synagogue (if they went at all) and to be ignored. He then heals her.
When Jesus visits two sisters in their home, one fusses about preparing a meal to serve him. The other one gets into a theological discussion with Jesus. The custom was for women to serve men and to leave theological discussions and debates to men. But when the one sister (Martha) complains that her sister (Mary) is not helping her, Jesus says that Mary has made the right choice for herself.
That does not excuse misogyny in Christianity. It does show how customs and religion can and do change over time. There are still religious extremists, just as there are political extremists. When they merge together, they are a serious threat to democracy and to civilization. There are many mainline religious people who see the threat, too. It makes no sense to discard them for being religious. We need all the help and votes that we can get. Alienating them will not help to save democracy.

a grown man raped and impregnated a 9 year old girl???
fuck this shit

(34,086 posts)9 years is ancient compared to some of the victims I went through the rape exam with. I believe the youngest I personally provided support for was 4.
My only point was that 9 is not half or the age of consent, which is 16 in 33 states (including Ohio). A lot better than it use to be - many states used to be in the low teens.
