Gavin Newsom reveals the motivation behind his Florida ad targeting Ron DeSantis

https://nordot.app/921142710181134336?c=592622757532812385

California Gov. Gavin Newsom and Florida Gov. Ron De Santis have been trolling each other recently on the pandemic, abortion, LGBTQ rights and more.

But Newsom said that what pushed him to air an anti-GOP ad in Florida over the Fourth of July was DeSantis’ treatment of the Special Olympics. The state threatened to fine the organization $27.5 million if it didn’t drop its COVID-19 vaccine mandate before the 2022 USA Games in Orlando last month. Special Olympics officials complied.

“He did something that tipped me very directly, and that was going after the Special Olympics. I had an emotional response to that,” Newsom told The Bee, his voice catching momentarily. “That led to the consideration of doing something a little bit more expressive and that was the determination on the ad.”

Newsom spoke Friday to The Bee in the U.S. Capitol, where he has been meeting with federal lawmakers this week on issues such as wildfires, gun violence and education.

Problem is the general public thinks my comment is an exaggeration.

Some murderers do it one at a time with a gun, some do it thousands at a time with legislation.

Somebody did an analysis of different presidential races and compared the height of each president back in, I think, the 80s or 90's, and apparently in almost every race the taller candidate won. (That I think was one of Dukakis's problems, not just the tank thing.) I think the conclusion at the time was that comparative height gave the impression of comparable strength or weakness.

Most politicians at least pretend to be personable, if only to gain a few votes. Not DeSantis. He's a mean, nasty, pugnacious fireplug of a man, always ready to bully anyone who stands in his way. His followers don't like him all that much, but they do approve of how he hurts the people they don't like.

But I am proud of the job he’s done here in California. I would like to see him run. I don’t know that I would want to see him challenge Biden if Biden is running in 2024. I doubt it would be a successful challenge and might hurt his prospects in the future if he angers people. Not that the party doesn’t need reform and fresh blood-it does- but I want him to stay viable going forward.

I said this when he was nominated. He's the man we needed after trump, but his age is gonna wear him down physically more than the age factor is wearing down the voters' perception of him.

We need new blood to counter the new extremism from the other side. The growing block of younger voters coming up is overwhelming trending liberal. If we keep giving them old candidates, they will not turn out for us.

And this is coming from a 72 year-old lifelong Democrat.

The torch needs to be passed.

In fact, since Hoover only Carter (faced a primary always causes a loss for us), Bush I and Trump have lost as incumbents...That is three in 90 years. Thus, Biden must run... Johnson was hounded out of office...one of the greatest legislators ever, and we lost the presidency in 68 also.

president. What you say here is a right-wing talking point. There is no one who could win the rustbelt in 24 either other than Biden. I support Democrats always. I am sorry you are not young nor energetic but Biden is very active and in good shape and barring ill health needs to run.

I wouldn't blame President Biden if he just called it 'victory' and didn't run, it's a brutal job, he's had to deal with a disgusting mess. He kicked TFG's ass, got at least one really good SCOTUS justice in and stopped a bunch of the destruction.

Both Newsome and Harris want this, bad, and there really are no other contenders quite as strong.

The nomination is always going to be the incumbent's if they choose.
