The Maryland Democrat voiced his concerns during an interview Friday with SiriusXM, per The Hill. His statement came one day after the House select committee, which is probing former President Donald Trumps irresponsible inaction during the insurrection, concluded its final hearing of the summer.
Obviously Im impatient, said Raskin, a majority member of the House committee. We dont have a lot of time certainly in Congress to do our work because at the end of this Congress, were over.
The House committee on Jan. 6 is tasked to garner evidence, draft a report and issue recommendations to the DOJ to prevent future insurrections. The DOJ, which is conducting its own probe into the riot, holds the authority to press criminal charges.
Raskin is concerned time is running out for the House panel, as a new Congress will take hold in January 2022. He said he hopes his committee can finish the job before years end, telling SiriusXM the panel is in a hurry, but were also in a hurry for America because we gotta deal with people who attack the constitutional order before the 2024 election.
And were still in front of the 2022 election so I would like to see some motion there, but beyond that, I dont really want to say much more because Merrick Garland is my constituent and I do not beat up on my constituent.

(171,102 posts)Garland added that every citizen should be concerned about the state of Americas democracy, and said that investigators shouldered an enormous duty to hold everyone criminally responsible to account while also doing so with integrity and professionalism.
We have to get this right, said Garland.

Running for President Wont Save Trump from Jan. 6 Investigation, Justice Department Says

(16,940 posts)He CAN be prosecuted for his crimes - being a candidate does not give you immunity. It WOULD give the candidate an opportunity to claim "politics!' - but the evidence would shut that down real fast to those that can recognize facts - and for those that can't or won't - it wouldn't matter WHEN you prosecute!
Another 'advantage' to the charges coming later - less time to find a replacement candidate who would then be running a campaign for the dead-start.

(14,187 posts)Once he declares he is untouchable for prosecution until the end of the election and the end of his second term should he win in 2024.
The Teflon Don - insulated from any/all criminality because the office of the presidency provides full immunity from wrongdoings.
What a fucking joke.

(25,816 posts)If that were the case any criminal could declare him or her self to get out of prosecution.
Plus, he will not ever be elected again. By 2024, there will either be a guilty verdict, his death,
or such a mountain of evidence against him that only a small part of his cult will vote for him.
Also, if he declares he won't be able to steal all of the donations he gets, supposedly for his
campaign, like he is now.

(53,922 posts)Something. Just a sign, please, that there's an attempt to catch up so the trump cabal doesn't get to run out the clock in Jan. 2023 if Dems don't hold the majority and the J6 committee just fades away into history with nothing done with the revelations and evidence of trumps crimes it has uncovered.
