Did a Republican DA deliberately undercharge Rep. Zeldin's attacker with a bail-ineligible offense

so that Republicans could capitalize on the suspect's release to attack Democrats and Governor Hokul on NY's bail reform law?

Alleged Zeldin attacker now held on a federal charge

The alleged attacker had been charged locally with second-degree attempted assault that is ineligible for bail to be set, and a defendant must be released. Sandra Doorley, the district attorney of Monroe County where Jakubonis was initially charged, is a co-chair of Zeldin’s campaign.

Lee Zeldin attacker David Jakubonis arrested on federal assault charge

The man who attacked New York Republican gubernatorial candidate Lee Zeldin during a campaign stop near Rochester on Thursday evening was arrested on Saturday on a federal assault charge, reports say.

David Jakubonis is set to make a court appearance in front of US Magistrate Judge Marian Payson later in the day according to ABC7.

He was previously charged at the state level with attempted assault in Monroe County, but was already out of jail by Friday morning.

Wow. No wonder that attack looked fake. Was it planned and she would make sure he'd get taken care of?

Something is very fishy.

...........Mr Zeldin has questioned why Mr Jakubonis was released from his initial custody at 3 am on Friday morning — a time of the night when there was no access to mental health resources. He said he should have been held until the morning when he could receive help.

The New York Times reports that Monroe County district attorney — Sandra Doorley, co-chair of Mr Zeldin’s campaign — could have chosen to charge Mr Jakubonis with a violent felony that would’ve required bail and pushed to keep him locked up, but chose not to.

A spokesperson for Ms Doorley said she would recuse herself from the case.

PR, which he dearly needs. No one upstate knows who he is, but they all know Hochul.

She had no business being anywhere near this. How is a district attorney allowed to be this involved in a gubernatorial campaign to begin with?

In trying to find out more about Jakubonis without reading it in the NY Post, I found this:

https://meaww.com/david-jakubonis-attacked-rep-lee-zeldin-mental-issues-medal-winning-army-career

(eta - meaww.com is "slight to moderately conservative in bias." They erroneously reported that Jakubonis had a knife and spent a bit too long with a gossipy neighbor, but otherwise seemed to be giving a pretty fair account.)

Jakubonis is an Army veteran who received a medical discharge in 2012. His wife is deceased and custody of their twin children was given to his brother. (Ouch.) Apparently he has mental health problems and issues with alcohol abuse. What he did was wrong, but this is a man who needs help. Even Zeldin got that part right.

No kidding. Why is anybody released from jail at 3 am?

8. It's a Long Island story because Zeldin reps a district in Suffolk County, so Newsday
