Cambria California polices themselves!

I was there last week for a small getaway. I went to the local liquor store and I asked the owner if I would have a problem if I drank my michelada while sitting at the beach. He commented, “No you won’t! We don’t have a police department! We police ourselves!”

I live in a city where there is very little crime and regardless you can’t drive down the street without seeing a cop in an $80,000 SUV! Yet we have zero public transportation and even less free activities for children after school!

Boy! Do we need to Cambria our city!!

from Cambria. I played oboe in the town orchestra several times. I couldn't afford to live there, though. Heck, I couldn't afford to live where I did live anymore.

It's the last reasonably large town going north on Highway 1 before you get to Carmel. It's in a beautiful spot north of Morro Bay.

Haven’t been there for quite a few years. The galleries, the shops, going down to Moonstone Beach to watch the sea lions up close.

Do they still have the outdoor BBQ place?

I read stories here on DU about places where the police are always in everyone's business and actually show up when called for things like minor acts of shoplifting, burglary, vandalism, fender-benders, drinking a beer at a public park with alcohol restrictions, etc..

Where I live in California the police or sheriffs don't reliably show up unless someone is bleeding or on fire. They don't hang out at WalMart waiting to scold teenage girls stealing lipstick, or people walking out the front door with televisions they didn't pay for. WalMart, Target, Safeway, etc., hire their own security.

Police and sheriff departments are perpetually understaffed here, probably because of high housing costs and the relentless sordidness of the work, some of it originating from within the departments themselves.

I'm certain a guy working in the local liquor store has done plenty of policing himself.
