Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.), a man whose salary we all unfortunately help pay, is writing a book, or having someone write one under his name. Either way, its coming out in May 2023, and its called Manhood: The Masculine Virtues Americans Need.
Well save you the suspense: This book literally no one asked for is based on a speech Hawley once gave to fellow reactionary idiots:
"Can we be surprised that after years of being told that they are the problem, that their manhood is the problem, more and more men are withdrawing into the enclave of idleness, and pornography, and video games?"
Hawley announced the book days after he made headlines for running in fear away from a Capitol insurrection he helped foment. In a video shown at the House Jan. 6 hearings, which drew much laughter from the room, Hawley raises a fist in support of the mob of insurrectionists outside the Capitol, and then later literally sprints through the halls to escape them.
So this is definitely the most hilarious and humiliating possible moment for the senator to announce that hes writing the definitive book on what it means to be a man. But conservative men will no doubt buy it nonetheless, because the masculinity panic on the Right is very real: Fox News darling Tucker Carlson, who hosted an entire special on how to raise testosterone levels earlier this year, had a former Abercrombie and Fitch manager on his to recommend tanning ones testicles. Nevermind that experts warn that toasting your balls (bromeopathic therapy, as Carlsons show called it) could actually kill a mans fertility, because testicles hang outside the body specifically for the purpose of keeping sperm cool.

(34,454 posts)The only good thing about this is he's never going to live this down. The bad thing is he'll probably get re-elected just because there's an "R" after his name and this is Missouri we're talking about.

(11,744 posts)Men and women have been socialized to behave in different ways, though there is alway overlap. Some of that difference is because of physiological differences (again, overlap). The problem is that throughout history, THE MEN in charge have both advantaged "male" or "Masculine" traits, and devalued "female" or Feminine" traits.
As women have demanded equitable treatment and respect, FRAGILE men have seen it as an attack on masculinity.
I am cis male and while I do not fit neatly into masculine/feminine traits, I like my tools, my sports, etc... but I am not a "manly man". What I DO NOT DO is treat women like sex objects, like "damsels in distress", like inferiors, or like some curiosity that I can't figure out. I treat women with respect and try to understand who they are as individual people and how their experience in the world, as women, has shaped their ideas.
People are not mad are MEN, they are made at MEN WHO ARE IDIOTS, like Josh Hawley.

(3,557 posts)For some, being a man means wearing work boots, driving a big truck, eating a lot of meat, and treating women like crap. These sorts of men are only about show and seldom show any real spine.
When duty calls, these guys run - just like their favorite chicken hawk politicians.
(As an aside and as a combat veteran, I cant blame anyone for dodging the draft in Vietnam. I only hold a grudge against those who dodged the draft then went on to tout hawkish positions. Theyre too scared to fight in a war themselves, but its fine for them to send other peoples children to die in a war)
