One America News (OAN) was dealt another major blow when Verizon announced that it would quit carrying the far-right cable news channel on its FiOS service, effective this Saturday, July 30. This comes after OAN being dropped by AT&T;s DirecTV in April.
Journalists Jeremy W. Peters and Benjamin Mullin, in an article published by the New York Times on July 26, stresses that between Verizon and DirectTV, OAN has lost access to millions of potential viewers. DirecTV has around 15 million subscribers, while Verizon FiOS has around 3.5 million.
OANs remaining audience will be small, Peters and Mullin explain. The network will soon be available only to a few hundred thousand people who subscribe to smaller cable providers, such as Frontier and GCI Liberty, said Scott Robson, a senior research analyst at S&P; Global Market Intelligence. OAN also sells its programming directly to users through its OAN Live and KlowdTV streaming platforms, but those products most likely provide a fraction of the revenue generated by traditional TV providers.
By losing Verizon, the Times reporters note, OAN has lost a a major stream of revenue: the fees it collects from Verizon. Robson told the Times, I really think this is the death blow for the network....
Thoughts and prayers.

(38,582 posts)When 2 companies have that much power over the decision of what people can or can't see, it's an issue.
Hell, you can't even get live PBS stations on any of the free streaming services.

(12,615 posts)Its like trump screaming about getting tossed from twitter; if you WANT to hear what he has to say you still can, its just not as simple as twitter.
Or, some billionaire can give them their own platform. like billionaire trump!

(37,162 posts)Another way of looking at this is "OANN is now thrust into the same situation that attempts at liberal outlets have face right from their starting gate: No sugar-daddy execs handing them access." They have to struggled their entire time with limited reach and a "hand to mouth" existence.

(7,921 posts)Our local CBS affiliate KPAX recently ADDED Newsy to their regional lineup as a separate digital broadcast channel. They are far more obviously a propaganda network than is FOX and very clearly take the Russian line on issues like Ukraine and international sanctions.

(10,435 posts)What dumbasses. They came for the leftists FIRST.
Such crybabies. They cancelled Air America before the stupid phrase "cancel culture" was even invented.
There is really no main-stream liberal media, and hasn't been since Air America. There are numerous podcasts, and video channels, but those are watched/listened to by already-agreeing audiences that subscribe. The general public won't go to the effort of looking up, subscribing or paying for that.
The only easily available media is either rightwing, like AM radio and Fox, or corporate-approved like MSNBC

..."but if they can cancel us conservatives, they will inevitably come for you too."
You don't get it, do you, sweetie? Welcome to Liberalville. We've been "cancelled" for decades. No liberal sugar-daddies who invest in and promote liberal POV networks. You're just finding out what we've been dealing with all along.

(164 posts)their message to me, and sure other subscribers, was it came down to economics, whereas OAN wasn't willing to pay any increases affiliated with the renewal. Can't see Verizon dumping OAN over their right-wing ideology. You know how those guy's roll.
