Kim Crockett, the leading Republican candidate for Minnesotas secretary of state, questioned in 2020 whether people who are disabled should be able get assistance to vote.
That year, the Minnesota Supreme Court upheld a law allowing individuals to help people with disabilities or difficulty reading English when theyre filling out ballots. In a radio interview shortly after the ruling, Crockett said, So, the Minnesota Supreme Court ruled that indeed you can help an unlimited number of people vote if they are disabled or cant read or speak English, which raises the question: Um, should they be voting? We can talk about that another time.

This is pretty freaking evil. I mean, the election deniers have ran their course, are exhausting, are a nuisance, etc.
The problem is, as bad as it is to avoid reality, she isnt just an election denier. I know people like to refute Godwin and all that stuff, but Nazis persecuted people with disabilities. This thing wants to take away their right - not privilege - their right to vote. What in the world is the justification behind denying voting rights to the disabled? Does she think shes going to win votes off such a platform? Why are they against people voting?
As far as not reading or speaking English, maybe thats her interpretation that theyre here illegally, but whos to say people who dont speak or read English arent here legally as a citizen or resident? Its also none of her concern what tongue somebody in this country speaks, so long as their actions are non-threatening or impeding on others. Another persons conversation usually is none of your business, in English or another language.
I have to say, this is awful and horrifying even by modern day Republican standards.

Trying to deny voting rights to disabled people doesnt sound like a winning strategy.

(50,000 posts)On more than one occasion the voter claims they never received their absentee ballot.
In 2020 one of the home workers came out and told me she thinks another home worker deliberately threw out the voters ballot because he was a Democrat. We tried to get a replacement ballot but time ran out.

(1,901 posts)You obviously cant prove that, though that would certainly be crime, and the very cheating they accuse us of engaging in.
They dont want people voting.

(13,632 posts)One guy is disabled by diabetes, and they had to LifeFlight him to Cour D Alene to amputate his leg. His wife is disabled too, and his brother put up a GoFundMe to pay expenses. I don't think he's been on disability long enough to qualify for Medicare even.
His FB posts were all Trump humping and food. After going dark because of diabetes related medical issues, his first post back was complaining about a pizza delivery. If he wasn't blowing off dietary restrictions, he sure made kt look like he was.
Messing with the disabled in this state will cost them as many votes as our side.

He wouldnt like it too much if people are trying to take the right to vote from him.

(1,654 posts)I find a number of people around me who resent others speaking another language, be it Spanish or other, seem to be a bit paranoid about it. Suspicious, like they might be saying something about him/her and are upset about it. I was shopping with an acquaintance, and she said, "I wish they didn't jabber among themselves." I said don't worry, they're not talking about you.
Having grown up with Polish paternal grandparents, unfortunately we were never taught the language, but almost every year my sisters and I spent a month of our summer vacation with them, and they used Polish to discuss things they didn't want us to hear, like if we were going to get a treat of going to the movies that evening while my grandmother and aunt went to play bingo, or go shopping for summer sandals, and they didn't want us to know about it ahead of time so we wouldn't bug them if it was time yet, or whatever. So being around others speaking another language among themselves brings back happy memories. Looking forward to a double feature with my 2 sisters. Oh, we knew sometimes they discussed adult family members, but us girls knew it usually meant good things.

(1,901 posts)The only way I could see it being a problem of speaking another language is if theyre doing so because they want to threaten someone and/or do something violent.
If theyre talking about me, well Im not a kid anymore. People arent obligated to like me or anything like that.
Again, if its none of someones business what people say in English, hows it ones business if they say something in another language?
